Can you spot 10 cars in a row with correct lighting?

Since the start of the week I have been trying to spot 10 cars in a row in oncoming traffic with the correct lighting on their car, I have yet to get 10. Theres either a bulb or bulbs blown, fog lights on, lights out of focus or simply no lights turned on. Theres has to be a good 20% dodgy. Check yourself and see if you can spot 10 in a row, some fun for the traffic...

I've spotted 2 crazy cars in the last few days, a Megane, and a Punto (Not saying anything in particular against those cars) - both had indicators on for brake lights, and brake lights on for indicators - with all the other lights softly glowing too.

I reckon in the early evening when it's just getting dark, you'll be lucky to find 2 in a row, let alone 10. Parking lights, parking lights and fog lights, one parking light only, one parking light and one fog light (usually on opposite sides) or even no lights at all are the order of the day round here.

Very common for that to happen on the punto. Often see 206's with all the brake lights on all the time when driving. Large number of new shape mondeos with rear right light out also.

One headlight not working one full day after it occurs is just lazinesss by the owner.

One of my pet hates... I'd crush the cars if I could, people would learn quickly!!

Problem is (being a garda) that there is no fixed penalty, i.e. ticket for this. Garda has to summons driver to court. Driver has to go to court. Takes the cop off the road for a day, judge fines around 25 euro.
Some stations give the option of producing car fixed the next day (this is cop trying to do the decent thing...no law involved)

And dont get me started on one headlighted taxis and mupits with foglights. Majority of car users do not know how to turn on the proper lights. Stood 20 minutes recently with a gent who couldnt figure out how to turn off his fog lights!!!

The problem of muppets driving with foglights on no matter what time of day or night and when theres no fog is getting much much worse.

When I'm driving and I see one of these eejits coming with his fogs on, I usually turn mine on and off a few times to draw his/her attention to it but in most cases, they are oblivious/too stupid to notice. A few of them have turned on their full beams to either annoy me or to tell me to turn my front fogs off .

I've been driving for over 25 years now and in that time, I've only ever come across fog that was bad enough for front fogs. Its not so long ago that they were an optional extra on cars instead of standard fit. IMO front fogs are next to useless anyhows and they should be banned.

I like to concentrate on my own driving without worrying about how many lights the car coming against me have on. Seriously, I drive quiet alot and I never see fog lights as a problem and think there is a lot of over-reaction on here about fog/spot lights.

Most fog/spot lights are dipped on vehicles nowadays.

If I had to give out about anything it would be the amount of idiots with NO lights on at all!

Odd thing I noticed recently is people driving about at night with front fogs on but headlamps off.. shameful really.

If that taxes your skills then you probably shouldn't be driving at all.

Renault Scenics are fairly common for this.

Question, you know cars have this deal that goes from 0 to 4 or fine, not sure, what is the correct setting?

Something that needs to be fixed
Why we could make progress with the national debt if fines were handed out to offenders who then paid up

Number of passengers; as the weight in the car goes up, pushing the back of the car down, that dial aims your lights down a bit.

If you have a heavy load in the boot, you can use that dial to adjust your lights, too.

thanks but there is a correct setting, that if you don't have it in that setting when you go for your NCT for instances, it will fail.

Besides I'm sure if it is to high it will bother other drives, but I won't necessarily know it is to high.

Yeah i once spotted this car where the lights were going nuts, the break lights would come on when he wasn't breaking, the indicators kept coming on and off, it was mad driving behind this thing.

i have to say i wasn't very nice and allowed another driver to over take me just so i didn't have to be being this car.

No way the driver didn't know this was happening.

Id agree. Personally with some people that I have talked and debated with take things so literally. "Fog lights are for FOG!!!" If thats the basis of their argument parking lights should only work with the handbrake on.

Again, personally I have never come across a car with front fog lights on that has caused any distraction or danger to me in terms of glaring.

I actually think its a good idea for cars that cant have legal daytime running lights fitted. Parking lights dont do much on most cars, some better then others.

If I was out walking or driving my car in the day or night would prefer to see oncoming traffic with dipped lights and/or fogs on then nothing at all.
Once I see a car with fogs that actually glares my vision then Ill rethink what I said.

For me the real problems with car lighting are:
    - People wait too late to put any lighting on (or forget to)
    - Broken bulbs
    - Rear fog lights on when they shouldnt.
    - Messed up alignment and angle settings (the dial mentioned earlier)

And I think its a good chance that if someone has had a bad glaring incident its probably because of the last reason anyway.
The only glaring I come across is when Im going up a bridge and a car is cresting it on the way back down.

To sum up, I dont get the anti front fog light argument.

    Its really very simple,
Wet roads + front fogs = extra glare.
Extra glare means I can't see lane markings, obstacles on the road etc.

I don't know what kind of roads you drive on, but I frequently drive from Donegal to Dublin and on those roads glare is a real pain in the hole.

Looks like someone has even setup a website about it,
    http://www.fogsoff.com/

Perhaps you don't notice it, but lots of us do and we shouldn't have to put up with other peoples crap.

I'd agree but there is a case for rear foglights but then you get the eejits who have these turned on permanently. You can't win with these muppets.

Totally agree, but rear are not as bad though.

What's the deal with Micra headlights, I mean there has to be some kind of manufacturing defect with them, 90% of them are dazzling?

Yes there is a correct setting, for normal driving (i.e. driver only, full fuel tank, tyres correctly inflated) the dial should be at 0. Setting the dial to other numbers will aim the lights lower and can reduce your visibility, although it is common practice in areas with good street lighting to keep your lights aimed low.

If the car is loaded, you should adjust the dial so that your dipped lights shine just below horizontal. If they are too high you will dazzle other traffic, if they are too low can you again limit your visibilty.

When a garage adjusts your beam alignment it will set the dial to 0 first. Similarly, the NCT will test your lights at 0, they'll usually turn the dial to 0 themselves if you forgot.

Northbound on the M50 last night, around 18.15, between Finglas and Ballymun, there was an idiot with no lights on at all!

Driver behind it flashed, which is what caused me to notice said idiot. Without that I probably wouldn't have seen the dark coloured car in the distance behind me. The indicators worked when it exited at Ballymun.

At least it was in the inside lane I suppose.............

Dunno what the hell the setup is with the wiring on Mark 1 and 2 Puntos but there is an alarming number of them with their rear lights wired incorrectly.

I was behind a Fiat van like this this other evening driving down Fitzwilliam St, we came to the junction between Merrion Sq and Upper Mount St and we had the green light next thing the whole back of the van lit up like a Christmas tree, every bloody light on the thing started flashing, driving lights, indicators, brake lights, reverse lights.. no idea what he was doing or what way he was going, so just slowed down and let him off, he ended up turning right onto Upper Mount St.. it was nuts..

I know some of the french cars and fiats have bad electrics but this took the biscuit!!!!

    Tox

Actually another thing Ive noticed is a lot of taxi's driving around the city at night with their front fog lights on and their driving lights on the low setting, the one you use when its just getting dark/low daylight setting .. I can recall seeing about half a dozen over the last week or so..

Is there any reason for this???

    That's the parking light setting.
Not to be used on its own when your vehicle is moving!

Need to use your dipped headlights in those conditions and to be honest should be used in all driving conditions, day or night.
