Eternal question - overclock old chip or buy new?

My friend has a 3 yr old Pavillion with an e6400 core2duo chip in it (2.13ghz) on a locked (impossible to flash or anything) intel 965 motherboard (and old PC5300 ram).. I feel the CPU is bottlenecking the GPU quite a bit for games and I was wondering what the best option might be..

If I bought a new motherboard and fan, how much could I overclock the e6400 reasonably with that ram?

Also would I not be better off just buying a cheap AMD chip and motherboard, what would be the equivalent AMD dualcore chip now vs the e6400 overlocked at perhaps 2.7ghz?

Depends on a number of factors really, specifically what motherboard you'd be getting, the size of the case and what cooling it can accommodate.

tbh, you'd probably be better buying a new motherboard, a new cpu heatsink and overclocking. You'd easily be able to get 3Ghz out of it.

Also, in regards to bottlenecking the GPU, I'd say that old PC5300 RAM isn't helping. With the new motherboard I'd get better RAM, then overclock the CPU.

New MB for e6400 is about 50 euros then the ram will be 35 or so, plus a cooller ontop of that.. the cooller would have to be decent because its a crappy mAtx case, however does have a decent rear exhaust fan which is surprising

Just checking now I could get an AMD 780 am2 board for 40 euro (MSI) and a x3 435 chip for 60 and throw the old 5300 ram on.. is that better than an e6400 @ 2.8ghz?

He is running a 9800GTX+ as he has replaced the PSU
