Using half of return ticket

I was supposed to be going to London with my parents for a few days for New Years but I now have the option of working the days we were supposed to be away which I really don't want to turn down.

I know I've heard somewhere that if you don't use the outward portion of a return ticket then the airline cancels the home journey which is fine as I won't be travelling - but will it affect my parents? I'm just concerned that their home trip could also be cancelled as we're all under the same booking? We're flying with Aer Lingus to Heathrow if that makes any difference

    Why not ask Aer Lingus?

Its shouldnt make a difference, I travelled to the states on a ticket booked with another person who didnt go with no problems. But to be safe I would call Aer Lingus

aerlingus.com seems to be down - or at least I haven't been able to get on all morning, was going to look for a contact number. Also I have spent almost an hour on hold for them before so thought I'd try on here first

Because I hate when people don't update a thread after asking the question - I rang Aer Lingus (thanks for the number - as I booked mine online I was told to call 0818 365044 instead). Only the person who doesn't use their ticket would have the return portion cancelled and also I can get the taxes refunded onto my card (minus a fee) which is only about 30 euro but that pays for the parents bag on the flight anyway so I'm happy enough.
