Introducing Puppy To My Dog

    Hey Guys,

I have a 5 year old female boxer, she is neutered. My brother and his girlfriend are staying with us for Christmas and is bringing his 14 week old Labrador pup too. We introduced the dogs last week as the boxer has socialised much with other dogs as we live in the country. The boxer got extremly excited and was yelping and foaming an awful lot, she was almost stalking out the puppy. We decided it was best not to let them get too close as the puppy was frightened so we put the pup in his crate. The boxer continued to be very excited and almost trying to get into the crate. The boxers temperment with humans is fine but we are now worried that maybe it might be a bad idea to have the dogs together at Christmas. Does anyone have any tips on what we might be able to do to introduce the dogs without incident?

    Thanks.

Perhaps get them to spend time together on neutral ground, that way the pup won't be a trespasser than needs a dressing down.

Tire the boxer out with a really long walk before introducing them (tire the pup out too!!!), and perhaps let the dog sniff around the pups bed first for a while.

Introduce them on neutral territory (perhaps a park or open space).

Hold the pup and let the boxer have a good sniff of the pups ass! This will let the boxer figure out what the pups all about without having the pup jump all over it! Once they seem to be ok with eachother, give them a good bit of space to run around together. if the pup is chasing back, and interested with the boxer, let them play as long as they dont get too excited.

Call the boxer away from the pup every 30seconds or so and give it a nice treat.

Basically let them play it out in an open safe space until they tire out together or get bored of eachother.

Make sure the pup doesnt harass the boxer tho, the boxer will need its own space when they go indoors.

Dont fuss over either dog too much, try to ignore them as much as possible (while obviously watching them intently from the corner of your eye).

NEVER leave the dogs together alone even when you think they're getting on great, you'd never know what could happen.

And hopefully it'll all go smoothly and you'll all have a great christmas!!!!

If your boxer gets jealous easily you should ensure that you and your partner pay little attention to the other dog, and when letting them inside or go from room to room let the boxer go ahead of him/her. have some extra treats to give them both for the first evening ( the boxer will associate the treats with the arrival of the dog and know the new dog isn't competition for resources.
