I had the camera handy today while working on a laptop, so I took a quick snap of the dust built up around the heatsinks of a laptop.

It was in for a software issue but the fans were spinning like crazy and the whole laptop was extremely hot.

10 minutes later the laptop running a whole lot better. Luckily fan was easily removed and did not have to dismantle the laptop.attachment.php?attachmentid=99063&d=1260913332

ouch: link to the image dont IMG tag it :p

thats a lot of dust alright, looks like it made a perfect dam on the vent.

Lucky for you you can reach your fan without major surgery. Much less than I can say for my own.

That's a lot of dust alright. Yeah on my laptop it requires open heart surgery to get to the fans. And the last time i did it i was surprised how little dust was actually in there. I suppose some laptops are worse than others for picking up dust.

Yeah, some laptops are worse than others. That particular model was a Gericom laptop.

Also depends on where you use your laptop.

Well I notice on my Hard Disk ventspace there is a gold microfilm that stops most if not all dust from getting into it without disrupting airflow too much. Never spotted anything on my CPU sink but ive never even gotten to it. it wouldnt be visible from the outside. but considering the laptop is 2 years old is a safe bet as laptops are getting newer theyre coming out with these dust screens to slash maintenance and heating issues.
