Nope I'm the same, I put it on sky+ soon as I read this thread. I think it's the athletes in us all, we need our sleep. :pac:

But what if you wanted to watch something you had recorded on a different TV. You can bring VCR's around the world with you. Sky + on the otherhand is stuck in your living room forever (until the box breaks down, then its gone altogether).

    I'll stick with VCR's myself :D

Must tape this programme, looks interesting.

Looks good. Don't have Sky+ myself and just in from a 10k run so will be into the shower then bed.. Hopefully some kind sort on here might stick up a torrent!!

I think Channel 4 have a section like RTE Player. i think its called 4 on demand?? and you can see some programmes on it after they have been screened.

I could be wrong on that but their website might be the way to go if you don't have sky+ like me

An hour to go, i may still be up, but having read the blurb from channel 4
What does it take to become an international marathon runner? Filmmaker Alex Vero, 16 stone, obese and a heavy drinker, goes on a journey to find out firsthand what it takes to become an international marathon runner

i think i'll end up throwing the remote at the TV!

I'm logging off after reading this Alex Vero - Filmmaker and athlete

maybe the east african's were always better, just they couldn't the tube or air flight to run in london back in the 60's?

when someone finds the torrent url maybe let us know.

Interesting watch. I've been following this for a while and hoped I'd get to see it.

As a documentary I thought they should have either followed just him and his training or (and this would have been really interesting) looked at just the two younger runners. Trying to do both meant you only got two halves of two different stories. More actual numbers would have been good as well - how fast did Ben do Amsterdam, for example.

On the running side (without giving the story away) I think it was a bit misleading. He may have been 16 stone but he apparently finished 76th or 78th in the MdS prior to this project, so he was neither new to endurance running nor is he the average punter with average ability he made out. He did make amazing progress (especially over half's) and I suppose it shows what smart and hard training can do for people.

Mod note - not everyone has seen it yet, please use SPOILER tags (
    like this
) if you're going to discuss the actual performances

I had been following this Alex Vero chap since I read a Runners World article on his quest a couple of years back. The documentery was ok , but not great.
It may have been edited a lot for TV but I would have liked to see more detail on his progression. It seemed to skirt over this.
But it did provide us with evidence that through sheer dedication and very hard work and coming from a similar start point to his that is is possible to go sub 2:30 in a marathon (probably 2:45 for ladies) - BTW I don't think that was a spoiler.

I agree 100% on the films focus, it would have been good to have focussed properly on his training and progression and given proper progress reports.

Not sure I agree with your conclusion though. What was his actual fastest marathon?
From the film it looked like the fastest he went was 2:58 in Palma. I know he raced Paris but it wasn't in the film and I don't know his result. His 1/2 times were very good (1:13 PB I think) but even at a claimed 100+ mpw I didn't think he even went sub 2:45. The claim will be injury put paid to London but the injury was a result of over-training (he says running with a blister rather than resting changed his gait which injured his achillies) and even at that we don't know how fast he would have run

[edit] He ran 3:10 in the very hot Paris marathon of 2007, with a first half of 1:22 and a planned target of 2:36

Thanks Amadeus - I figured out the spoiler stuff now ;)
The final lab testing before his injury suggested he could go sub 2:30. Though I think he would have had to lower his half to 1:11 or something to achieve that.
Size wise he seems to have a big frame so physically he may not be ideally suited to marathons. Maybe that's why he took up triathlons. I see his run split in the Barcelona was 40:01 for the 10k which was fair.

apparently finished 76th or 78th in the MdS

Excuse my ignorance but what is MdS? Thanks.

Decent documentary. I watched it with Mrs Floyd and I don't think she is as impressed with my times/improvements now

Mrs Floyd: "whats your half marathon time?"
    Me......."never mind"

The Marathon de Sable. He ran it in 2005, finishing 68th

Gotcha - yep I agree but there is a world of difference between being ablle to do, being predicted to do and doing.

But yeah, tri would probably suit better. I'm waiting for him to announce he's in training for 2012 Oly Tri qualification :D
    And welcome to nerd world!

    Potential is nothing.
    Results are everything.

    Just watched this on youtube.

    Not a bad documentary.
Confirmed two things I constantly repeat.

    1. Getting to the startline of a marathon uninjured is as tricky as running the 26 miles itself.
    2. Potential really is nothing. You got to do it when it counts.
