NCT required for (almost) classic ?

    Hi Folks,
I should know/be able to find this but not getting expected answer on various webpages.

I'm thinking of bringing in a 1982 3.5 Lt Rover and taking the hit for 2 years on the Tax. I figure I'll also get hit for about 1000-ish VRT.

What I cant get clear is whats going to get tested in the NCT. So, fair enough, its not exempt. But several years ago I had to NCT a '70s Jag and was told that cars pre-1984 (or 87 ?) were exempt for emissions. I can't find a reference to that on NCT.ie.

This particular car will pass the UK NCT. How much more difficult is the Irish NCT ?

    Any experienced/expert opinion ?

    I have a 1987 944 Turbo, no cat.

Your car would be going on the same criteria as mine I reckon.

There is an emissions standard you have to meet,
but it's far more tolerant than for modern cars.

Sorry I don't remember the specifics, my local indie had
to fiddle with the air flow meter (it's old and crap!) in order to
    get her pass.

Download the NCT Manual from the site, it has all the details.

All the emissions data is on page 15 of the PDF

The NCT is only €50, and it's a cheap inspection if you want to go
    about it that way.

You'll spend multiples of that doing a "Pre NCT" in a garage,
and you may end up spending money fixing things that don't need
    fixing to get the test.

A friend of my Dad's used to deal cars in the UK.
He'd always send a car for an MOT before buying it,
and then he'd have a list of stuff to fix in order to get it before selling it on.

    Worked well for him.....

The car will have to go through the full NCT, but the emissions tolerances are much bigger for older cars. My '86 Porsche 928 (like your Range Rover, a V8 petrol without a catalytic converter) passed well within the tolerances.

Edit - beaten to it :)

You probably assumed right, and I probably assumed wrong :)

He never mentioned "Range" anywhere, did he?

We're all guilty of presuming / assuming here :)

The car's an '82 so it ain't a P5 or even a P6. OP, please help us out of our misery here! :D

Has to be an SD1 with an engine that size.

Sorry. Keyboard activation error dropped the "Range" from "Rover".

    Thanks for the replies.
Now all I need to do is find the money !

My 1983 '924 passed it's NCT a few weeks ago and they gave it a serious going over.

Though to be fair to the chap who passed the car, he allowed some stuff on the visual inspection on the basis that the car was a weekend only, rather than a daily driver. Might be an idea to let the tester know it's a "hobby" car rather than one for driving kids to school. :)
