    Hi,

my land rover series 3 is not starting, diesel 2.25... it turns over fast but I don't see the glow plug light on the dash, it used to light up and start OK, but I have gone to try and start it and the glow plug light does not light up and so does not start.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Could be a whole host of things, but I'm guessing on the timer relay or a break in the series wiring on the plugs.... Have you a good multimeter?

The series 3 2.25 diesel doesn't have a timer relay, just a big resistor on the bulkhead feeding the series wired glowplugs. If one plug dies or a wire breaks, none of them work.

It's a case of pulling them out one by one and testing them after checking the wiring first as Gil suggests. Don't connect direct to 12V or they will burn out, the manual gives the proceedure (plenty of sites for downloading the manual for free). You'll probably find the end of one of them burnt away.

You can buy replacement parallel wired plugs from Paddocks and the like, they run off 12V so you can bin the resistor. I wired a set years ago through a mini starter solenoid to avoid overloading the ignition switch, I've also heard of a timer relay from a transit being used.

You might need to create a login for this site, but it's worth having:

That'll get you sorted I'm pretty sure.
