I went for an interview today with a well known pharmaceutical distributor in D20, I got there at around 10.40 the interview was meant to start at 11.00 am. Waited there for 25 minutes and nothing, no one came to interview me. 25 MINUTES past 11 o'clock.

When I went in the receptionist was the rudddest person I have ever met in my life, she actually said to me, do you want to come back at 11.00 am and sign in, instead of waiting here....I was shocked, especially when there was lots of free space and seats, so I said Id rather wait here if it's ok with you( its not like you are in town and u can go into shops). Then at 10.55 am I went to her desk to sign my name in (thats what she said to do) which I did, and she gets the visitor badge and throws it at me, it fell on the ground in front of other people, who just looked at her, she didnt even move an eyelid. Then kept asking me what my name is, spelt it for her 3 times, might I add very easy name to spell. God knows what she was thinking about. I have been so humiliated by her.

I wrote an email to the HR guy who initially organised this interview, and complained about her attitude and the fact that even though i was there no one bother to show up and interview me. Waisted time, money and petrol....not to mention my own dignity. I am so upset, I really wanted this job.:(

This is the second time ive to wait...the first time I was there for 45 mins waiting but at least the woman came in and said sorry about the delay...( forgot to mention that the first interview was for a different company)

That reminds me of a time a few years ago i went for an interview for sonopress and was supposed to be there for 11:00. The receptionist was showing another girl how to work the computer at the desk and it was not until about a half hour later someone walked out and asked for me and then said i was supposed to be there for 11:00 and not 11:25. The receptionist argued that i had only just turned up minutes ago and then to top it all off the interviewer just asked me every single question that was already detailed on my cv. I was just finished school at the time and the only work experience i had was in super valu. She really did not ask any questions relevant to the job .She asked me what i got in each subject in my leaving cert which was on the cv and nothing else. Some people do not have a clue how to be professional at all.

Cheer up. :) Personally I wouldn't have let it faze me especially in a job interview situation. Just smile! Who know what her problem was but in all walks of life, you'll always meet people like that. In all likelihood it had nothing to do with you personally. People are forever getting up on the wrong side of the bed. And some people are just rude cnuts without a professional bone in their body. You have to rise above the situation and focus on the job at hand. Perhaps the company planted her to weed out candidates? Granted, that would be a bit wacky...Still wouldn't have mentioned it to the HR guy meself - I'd be thinking what if she's his girlfriend...

just to clear something up - did you write this email before or after you got word back on the job? I am assuming from your post you did not get the job?

Problem is, if you emailed before they had made a decision about you then you kind of shot yourself in the foot by looking like a complainer, not a team player, etc.
If you emailed after the job was refused to you it can look like sour grapes cos you didn't get the job.
As pearcider says, learn from it, move on, try not to let these things get to you too much. At the end of the day the interview starts from the minute you walk in the door - even if you don't speak to the interviewer for 40 minutes you may well be being assessed by other staff. if you let things like this fase you or put you off your stride then you are letting them win.
No matter what, smile, be polite, look like you are thrilled to be there - PMA.

To me it sounds like the interview never took place?

Just keep thinking "karma" ... it's an employer's market now, but it won't always be.

Companies like that will find a real absence of workers when the market turns again, as surely it will.

The interview never took place as I walked out of the company and went to another interview that I had organised for that day, 1 hour later, hence why I wasnt able to stay and wait for someone to come and interview me, I had to make a decision so I thought instead of waisting both interviews I might as well just miss this one and give the other a good chance of getting the job. I sent the email after I got home from the second interview. So no I didnt get a chance to actually interview. I have to say I have been really dissapointed about the whole interview process with CMR. To top things up...CMR had that certain position advertised since last year, and i remember last year, while i was still working that I got numerous calls from agencies wanting to put me forward for this position, one actually did manage to put me forward, and we never heard back, then on the 08.12.2009 I get a call from their HR dept wanting to meet for an interview. I have to say its very dissappppppointing. It makes you want to give up. :(

It wasn't some weird test was it? Maybe to see how you handle yourself when confronted by an obnoxious person.
I doubt it though. No harm ringing the guy who arranged the interview and asking him / her what's up and why they didn't turn up.

    Bad form alright.

Did you ever hear back from them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 110 ✭✭notlongleft

did u ask at reception for them to ring the HR person when you were there?? Not a good idea to slag off the company on here if you wanted a job with them and were still holding out hope for an interview!

you want a hole in your head to work for a company like that

I would have thrown the badge back at her and just walked out, obviously wasting your time

Well think of it this way. Imagine you got the job? Doesn't seem like a friendly one you would enjoy to me!

OP, so you never heard the interviewer's side of the story? While I agree that the receptionist sounds completely unprofessional, you have no idea what reason the interviewer had for being late, there could be a thousand and one good reasons for someone running a half an hour or more late. I don't think I've ever had an interviewer arrive on time for me, 5 or 10 minutes late would be standard, half an hour on a couple of times. You even said yourself that a previous interviewer was 45 minutes late, "but at least the woman came in and said sorry". I would assume that the other interviewer would have apologised if you had waited.

Also, why would you organise 2 interviews within an hour of each other? Even if the buildings were right next door, I would still leave a minimum of 2 hours between start-times. I've often had interviews run longer than 45 minutes, never mind the possibility of the interviewer running late.

    Hi Op

I know it is a tough jobs market out there but I still think that when a person goes for an interview, they too have a right to interview the place as well, so look at it this way, if the receptionist is a rude person a lot of the time or has that attitude with people who come into the company then what type of a company is it? If they are late and give no word as to why they are late, again what type of company is it? If the job has been advertised repeatedly then you really have to ask yourself what type of a company is it? You have had a lucky escape because you could have got the job and been absolutely miserable there, at least you have a chance of working for a company that suits you. If you come across this type of behaviour again don't take it personally because as another poster pointed out the interview begins the minute you enter and it is very likely that the HR person might ask the receptionist what were they all like.

Oh I have had it up to hear with employers! as people have said they have the power now and with that power they have abandoned decent behaviour and manners. Over the last few months I have gone to interviews and had two interviews for one particular place.

Waited a week, heard nothing, sent an email asking if the position had been filled etc..no reply. I just found it to be so rude. I didn't call but why should I. I wasted hours of my life meeting them and having the whole degrading interview experience twice and they don't even have the courtesy to call me and tell me I didn't get the job.

    Drives me nuts!

You had a narrow escape, probably the same shower of B*stards i used work for only a different division of the company here in Tipperary. she sounds like she has the credentials of a proper rat!
F*ck it. Jobs are the same as looking for a suitable other half. you kiss alot of slimy frogs before you meet the prince/princess. good luck!

I think some posters need to realise that we are in a recession, and if there is a chance of you getting a badly needed job, it should be taken. Doing as this poster suggests would be plain stupid. The company could have been a good company to work for, or at the very least, somewhere to work so you can get paid (mortgage, bills, kids, food etc are not free).
Beggars cant be chosen. Its not about pride etc, get a job - try keep your dignity - put food on the table. It really is as basic as that.

look you have a point, but you would wonder that if she has to endure that kind of sh*t at the receptionist desk, and you only going for an interview, is this company untenable to work for?
ive worked for a pharmaceutical company similar to one op described and everyone from the receptionist a the desk, to the security, to some of the clowns beside me on the floor were always trying to bite the promotion carrot that the company left dangling. Alwyas out to hang people out to dry.
Money might be a necessity to a certain degree but its not everything.

if a HR guy would seriously consider going out or even taking sides with such a rude unprofessional bitch then you are DEFINITELY well of out of that company.

If it's the same company in D20 that I think it is; they have been advertising positions for quite some time now. Have wondered why they never seem to fill them - now I know.
