Just wondering for the 'average' pair of runners how many kilometeres before you should be trading them in for a new pair?

My current ones are nice and comfy, they look a state (mud etc) which doesn't bother me and only have about 230k on them. People (my mother esp) keep telling me I should get a new pair. Think I read somewhere on here that 400k is the average life span of runners - is that right or am i making it up?

I've always worked on the 500-600mls rule (800kms?)

I've got close to 500miles out of most previous pairs before switching to new ones, the last pair I've only got 350'ish miles from though and they feel well past it now to run in. Hope the latest pair last better or I'll be buying new ones far too often with the marathon training now kicking in.

thanks guys, that's what I thought, I just wanted to check, and figured was more likely to get a realistic answer here than say in a shop! So unless I see a pair I simply have to have in the sales I'll stick with my current ones!! :D
