I was in the bookies last week and there was a horse called war of attriction running on the flat in south africa.

I remember a few years ago a horse called Galileo won at the cheltenham festival at big odds and there was some people who backed because they taught it was aiden o'briens derby winner.

Surprised about the war of attriction one, there's an agreement in place that you can't name a horse after (or even closely similar to) winners of the Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, GN or a classic winner, Sth Africa mustn't have signed up to it.

    The Naming of Racehorses
In their early years before racing, Thoroughbred foals and yearlings dont have their own names. Instead, they are referred to by their colour, sex and the name of their sire (father) and dam (mother). For example, the great Nijinsky would have been a bay colt by Northern Dancer out of Flaming Page.

However, when a Thoroughbred is registered to race, its owners have to name it. Horses names are constructed in all sorts of ways. One of the most common is to try and combine elements from the horses sire and dam. Grand National legend Red Rum was by Quorum out of Mared, hence his name. Other names can reflect personal associations, such elements of the owners name or nickname, or even names which advertise a company.

The naming of racehorses in Britain is very carefully controlled by Weatherbys, the company which oversees many administrative areas of the sport. Strict criteria are applied in judging what name a horse can and cannot be given.

For example, horses names cannot be longer than 18 characters and spaces and names currently on the Register of Horse Names or names of horses who have won a major flat or jump race cannot be used (so there can only be one Best Mate or Shergar). And most famously, names whose meaning, pronunciation or spelling is obscene or insulting are prohibited.

I have checked back on the results for the day and there doesnt seem to be anything down for clairwood about that horse the day..

I either have the date wrong or more likey under the results for virtual racing there is a virtual track called happy hill which l have nevered heard of before.
Maybe l saw it under the betting for happy hill thinking it must of been a south africa track.

What about Galileo tho. he was a classic winner.

Found out the nicholls trained (decent) Free World was bread in France, allowing there to be 2 horses of the same name, still annoying though.

Both of these ran last December in Sandown on the same day, one race apart.

Neither won, had the potential to be a nitemare for punter who weren't aware.

The other Galileo was a Polish bred, I think it's only Ireland & UK that have this rule, not even sure about France.
