Now I need to get this in for a NCT ASAP so if anybody has any ideas? Like will I need the whole dials replaced? Would a one from a srap yard? What about the incorrect odometer reading if I get one?
Cheers guys and girls and merry Christmas..

It might only be the speedo cable coming from the gearbox up to the cluster, not sure on the price of it.

You'll need to have the fault codes read off, relevant to the abs problem. It's probably a faulty sensor.

What he said. You need to get it diagnosed. Most likely either a wheel speed sensor or the ABS module. The first would be easy / cheap to fix. The latter will be costly.

i dont think the speedo is tested is it? If it is, a €20 GPS speedo would do instead I guess...

As Unkel says, its probably an ABS sensor in one of the wheels or the ABS module itself. If one of the sensors is gone, then there is no speed information being transmitted to the speedometer. Same goes for if the module itself under the bonnet is dead.

I don't mean to sound smart, but try bringing it to a competent mechanic?

Did you check the passenger glovebox for the connection?

most cars around 1998 are obd 1 sockets, which meand the socket is under the bonnet and not inside the car. OBD 2 sockets are inside the car on the driver side. OBD 1 and OBD 2 have different connections.

Seriously OP, if your mechanic is unable to locate the OBD connector in your car that is some serious concerns you should have, plus he mentionned the connector should be around the ignition key, come on! Just get a new one.

That info is relevant to e36 BMW and other older models alright. Not newer models.

And a 1998 ford escort is a newer model?

The car in question is a Ford Escort 1.8 GTI.

Friend had a 98' 1.6 GTi escort years ago. Plugin as I remember is on the firewall when you life the bonnet.

Older speedos use a mechanical cable from the gearbox. As they're mechanical the work stand-alone.

If the speedo is uses and electrical sensor and fails then it's not unusual for the ABS to also not work as it needs to know the vehicle speed - ABS does not work below certain speeds.

If the speedo isn't working and the ABS light is on it's possible the ABS is working fine, and either Vehicle Speed Sensor or the wiring between the VSS and the ECU is faulty. More than likely the former.
