Unusual dental reappointment

Firstly, my dentist is fairly sound and I have been going to him for about 10 years, only down side there is normally at least a 4 week waiting period.
I rang 5 weeks ago and explained to the receptionist that my filling has broke
and I'd like to make an appointment and today was the day of the appointment.
I had to wait 5 weeks for the appointment take time off of work and drive in to town.So now I am in the chair, dentist asks whats the story I tell him he takes a look and says yes tooth needs to be filled and while he has me he will take a look at the other teeth. He then says other teeth are fine and to make an appointment for after christmas for the filling.I explain that I have been waiting
5 weeks for this appointment, he says well today was really only for a checkup,
I did not want to get in to an arguement with him so I said it to the receptionist in passing who said he is very busy.Anyway it turns out that I have to wait another 4 weeks for an appointment,9 weeks total and take more time off of work.Is this normal run of the mill stuff or should I take my business elsewhere.

Now that I think of it I had to get a filling before after waiting 3 weeks,he said he could only give me a temp filling which lasted about 10 days and that I would have to call back in 4 weeks for the proper job.7 weeks all together.

To put it bluntly mate...most dentists in Ireland esp Dublin are up their own arse. I mean I literally live 60 seconds up the road from a dentist and she told me i'd have to wait 3 weeks...I told her where to go she wasn't impressed but hey neither was I.

Compared to other countries their also robbing b*stards..so with that in mind I'll gladly jump on the dental tourism boat and head to another EU or Asian country for treatment..even the North is a better alternative

In my experience fillings are usually done on the spot. I do remember one time though I had to go back a second but that was because there was more than one filling involved.

OP it seems like the dentist is looking for additional consultation fee or maybe you will only be charged for that once because it is part of the same issue?

I used to go to a dentist near Grand Canal and he was so expensive. He broke my tooth on one occasion and more or less said I had to pay for it as the tooth was not stong anyway. And let me tell you there was no way I was paying to have it fixed, and I didn't.

Went to Smiles on O'Connell Street with a broken filling. Got a same day appointment and my filling was removed, and refilled within 20 minutes of me arriving there.

I find it really unusual that you explined to the receptionist why you wanted to see the dentist and then the dentist turns and says it was a check up? I wouldn't be paying twice for something like that, and the fact it could have been done then and there for you in a short space of time.

I will probably get slated but get in your car or get onto the bus or train and head up north as a private patient up there you get treated like a king/queen. if you want to pm me i can give you details of the dentist I personally have used up there

cute-cow, i don't know what happened at the first place you went to, but just want to explain something... teeth are brutally hard to break. the only time teeth break unexpectedly is usually during an extraction, and even then they're already compromised. if your tooth broke, it is very likely that it was already decayed and needed a filling.
as for what you say about smiles, they just had a quiet day. i've had a few too where people chance coming in and i'm able to see them straight away. it happens.
the issue about the receptionist was dealt with in the other thread about this same topic.
just to add, if you just want the tooth repaired, put your foot down and say it before you get in the chair. there's loads of businesses out there that will try to squeeze more money out of the customer. think getting a car serviced and they change perfectly good wipers and oil that you may have changed yourself the day before.

everyone's free to do that. but, if you are a prsi contributor, then the check up down south should be free (you're entitled to one per year). if you go up the north, make sure you only get done what you want. they may want to do a clean up for you which you are also entitled to free down south. well.. for the next couple of weeks anyway.
