Hi folks,

This is something I've been thinking about for a good while now. I've shot a few foxes who had great pelts and I've regretted not being able to keep them. But, I'd like to be able to do the job myself, and most importantly to a good standard! Say for the purpose of a rug, wall hanging or such, got no intention of making any hats, yet!

Does anyone have any good leads for me please?

There is someone on here that did it before. He posted in a thread couple months back but cant find it now. Made mittens for his daughter.
I think it was the same thread where thedragon made the fox steak:D

To make it easy for yourself, you can get kits from Aus/NZ made by a company called Leder, they have all the stuff you need to tan skins.
Scraping tool. tanning compound and leather oil.
You can make your own but it is not easy.

You wouldn't happen to know if they can be got this side of the world CJ, or even from the states?

Don't mind the above. One site wanted to charge me $88 shipping as cheapest option on an item valued around $50.

Sod that.

Looked around, same item, $25 postage on another site. That'll do!

This guy supplies taxidermy items - you can get the tan solution and tanning oil here. I've dealt with him on numerous occasions through E-Bay....never any problems.

You can also tan hides in an Alum tan....much cheaper and alum (aluminium sulphate) is available here in chemist shops.

The skin must be fleshed properly before tanning......any parts with meat left on or very thick skin could lose the hair if the tanning solution doesn't penetrate.
