Scale and polish, can it damage teeth?

    Hi,

Just a quick question about the scale and polish procedure. I got it done there on Friday. It had been a while so it took about 15mins. 90% of the stuff that needed to be removed was at my gumline.

My teeth feel great after it and very happy with it, except my bottom front two teeth seem a bit smaller than they were and seem quite sharp when I run my tongue along them at the back. The sharpness is at the edge where the two teeth are closest.

I was wondering does the ultrasound scaling damage teeth at all?

If so, how often is it recommended you should get it done? The dentist I go to said about once a year is about right, but if it is needed is ok to go and get it done more often?

I should have asked him there but it didn't cross my mind when I was talking to him.

    Cheers.

Really most people shoudl get a scale and polish every 6-9 months depending on how quickly you build up tartar (differs from person to person). The ultrasonic cleaner will not damage your teeth, the sharpness and strange feeling is the sensation of the tartar you were so used to being gone. Sometimes the teeth underneath the tartar can be senstive also, this goes away quickly.

Ultrasonic cleaners should not however be used around dental implants, you need spacial plastic scalers.

I love the feeling of newly cleaned teeth, about time I got mine done I think....:)
