How much to change the timing belt on SAAB 9-3 1.9 tid?

Hi Folks thinking of purchasing an 05 SAAB 9-3 Tid vector from up north. It has 102,000 miles on the clock with a full SAAb srvice history up to 80,000 and whilst it has been serviced since, this wasn't done at a SAAB dealership.

I am aware that the timing belts can give trouble and should be replaced every 40,000 miles or so. I would plan on using this to bargain him down from the £4995 he's asking.

The car looks very clean and tidy and seems to be well cared for. Have you any idea as to how much i'd be looking at for changing the timing belt - I'd like to get it done for peace of mind.

    Thanks in advance.

its only due one really now, the book says 120,000km but we change them at 90k, main dealer price is around 500 mark. As you change water pump, tensioner and idler pulley too

That's good to know, will see if I can get the same amount knocked off. Do you know anything else I should be on the look out for. The chap I spoke to seems genuine enough, he told me straight up that if I was in doubt i should buy with the knowledge that i'd be getting it done.

As I said above, the car seems in very good nick and seems to have been well cared for. Are they reasonably trouble free?

Does this have the same engines as the Alfa Romeo 1.9JTDs?

Is it the 150bhp version?. If so check its had the swirl valve/manifold done. Costly if it hasn't..about €1000

Budget around €600 for timing belt/water pump replacement

edit : Just seen the link...its the 120 version so no swirl valve issues for you then

One of my colleagues has one...the 1.9 diesel manual. He has an issue with it jumping out of 2nd gear and it seems that the synchromesh can give problems on these so maybe look out for this when test driving.

Beautiful car choice by the way bud.

Ask him if you can take it for a spin to a garage and get it looked over, or if you know any mechanic type friends, take em for a spin to have a look at it with you.

+1 to that-the book is a load of bollix. The timing belt and/or water pump is a big enough issue on the Alfa Romeo 1.9 at/around 55,000 miles.

....55k miles is 96k kms. Ahem. So changing at 100k kms is about right, although it's def a 120k km interval according to the book, to the dealer and everyone else.

I've been quoted €880 by dealer to do mine, Indy doing it now, for half that.

Nice car, and the 120 should be more frugal than the 150, too.

The only other thing to watch is that an awful lot of UK Saab's were sold to fleet, so check the history. If it's 'missing', then I'd wager it was a rep's car. Not bad in itself, if the history is there, but if it was rep'd, and there's no history............caveat emptor, as they say........

Hey just wondering if you've bought?? Had my eye on the black Saab there myself. My wife had an accident back in november with the bad flooding, aquaplaned and the insurance classed it as a write off. A 05 1.9 TiD 150bhp vector, 72k miles, got in UK a beautiful car. We were going to replace it with another but decided on something cheaper to have a bit of cash spare. Paid about €800 to get t/belt, full service and new pads all round last year about 2 months before the crash!!!

Paid €6.5k for the car and €4k in VRT, appealed the VRT and got €1100 back!! You'll notice the OMSP is around €11k at the moment. Last april it was nearly €17k - ridiculous.

Hope you got something nice. :D

ps I travel dual carriageway and motorway 35 miles each way to work and with the saab in cruise control @ 70mph i'd get 50 - 52 mpg - really very good. Gonna miss it :(

Including waterpump and the other bits and pieces? That's a good price for sure. Where did you have it done?

490 euro inc water pump OEM parts. Could've got it done elsewhere for 340 but place looked cheap
