Lower Body Weight Gain

    Hi,

Just looking for a bit of advice or just to clarify what I believe to be the answer to my own question-

    Past-
Basically I was very active playing sports (football / tennis) up until the age of 17 but then when I left school and began working this all came to an immediate halt.I was working in an office all day and doing little or no exercise with 95% of day spent sitting down.By the age of 20 I had put on about 3 or 4 stone and weighted 12.5 stone (not massive but I’m not the tallest guy in the world). The weight gain was mostly on the lower half of my body (thighs & butt) so I was quite pear shaped to say the least.

    Present-
In the last 6 months I have taking up running and playing 5 a side football every Tuesday. The 2 combined with less fatty foods and calories overall have allowed me to tone up and drop to just over 8.5 stone.I now feel full of energy all the time and find my stamina has increased 10 fold but, to be honest I don’t like the stick tin look at all. While out on the tear in town the weekend I had my photo taken by one of the group and I felt sick when I saw some of the snaps.I look like I have some terminal illness.

    Now my question-
I really want to put on a stone or 2 while I continue with the active lifestyle but am afraid that it will show more on my thighs and backside area again. If I increase my calorie intake gradually while I continue with the running and football (exercising lower body) will this ensure that the weight gain is purely upper body? Or is it just in some peoples makeup that they gain weight is in certain areas of the body. Is there a way to ensure upper body gain only??

Oh and I am a male aged 25 years of age. Just noticed that I failed to mention this throughout my post.

Op, well done on weight loss but based on your stats you have taken it too far IMO. that is too light for a guy your height ... if you want to look lean and not too big I would say 10.5 stone would still be within that so you should be looking to gain almost two stone ... just get in about 500 cals a day extra and do some weight training two to three times a week and be patient .. if your not gaining you can up the cals a bit more ..

Woah that is a lot of weight gone is such a small time fram. A LOT!!

It's a good thing you are looking to gain a bit. A lite of milk has 600+ cals, nuts a very calorific. Alone if you had 500mls milk and some nuts extra everyday on top of your current diet you would see a difference over time.

Throw in some weight training too. If you focus on big compound movements: all the better.

That's a lot of weight loss and you are definitely too light. the worst thing you could do now is to start eating all around you to gain weight. You need to do this sensibly. I would suggest that you get to the gym and start doing some light weights to start with. you can gradually increase as you go and get one of the instructors to do a programme for you. Start eating more but the more should be healthy food, not junk. Try adding some more carbs to your diet in the form of brown rice and wholegrain pasta, increase your protein intake to help support your body to grow muscle, not fat.

    I hope this helps!
