Julien Dupuy faces possible citing over alleged eye-gouge on Stephen Ferris

Only saw it a few times myself, couldn't make out if the second go by Depuy had real malice, don't think the first one had tbh. Certainly wasn't aware someone else was gouging in the same incident.

Absolutely correct reaction by Ferris when he pointed out Depuy (I think) to the ref.

Hope nothing comes of shaggy's effort on Sat - he's having a good season and in contention again for the 6N imo.

Saw it enough times - this guy has issues and needs a lengthy ban while he goes on an anger management course. Pity because he is a good player. :(

Is there more than one camera angle?

Seemed inconclusive from the initial replays.

At a Magners League game there are usually a minimum of six camera angles. At ERC level this can be even more.

Just watched the match video again a few times, suppose Depuy deserves whatever he gets.

Struck me as being very similar to the Jennings incident - player (Depuy and Jennings) being held and making contact in the eye area of an opposing player (Ferris and Kennedy) in an effort to be released and rejoin the play.

Surely if this guy gets banned, Yachvilli will rightfully get picked again for France. The most overlooked scrumhalf in the world.

You've got to be kidding me, the Dupuy incident is several orders of magnitude worse. He rakes his face once, looks around, then pulls his head back by the scrum cap and goes for a second rake.

He did it a second time, any plea of self defence or similar BS goes out the window.

I'd give him a 6-9 month ban with an extra year suspended to prevent a repeat.

As we saw with Jennings ban, the ERC are pretty merciless with suspensions. Dupuy will get the maximum ban possible.

I haven't seen any game footage, but I was checking scores over the weekend on the Sky Sports website, and the text commentator signed off with something along the lines of "That's all from Ravenhill this evening, oh and watch out for a citing for Dupuy over the coming days".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

Scumbag. And I'm sorry if that's against the rules but that was just ****ing disgusting.

I'd like to see 6 month bans dished out as a rule for first offences. For ****s sake they're professional sportsmen, ban them for stupidity if nothing else.

    Agreed, Depuy's looked much worse.

The incidents were similar in that both Depuy and Jennings were held when trying to return to play, also similar in that both Depuy and Jennings appeared to make contact in the eye area of the opposing player twice.

This Gouging thing is getting mental.

Every other week someones fingers are in someone elses eyes.
On a somewhat related note, did anyone see the highlights on Sat night?

I am considering writing to broadcasting standards about Tom McGuirk.
The kind of ignorance and appalling manners displayed during the exchange with Hook must surely be affecting the children.

While I agree that lievroment has been picking the wrong 9, Elissade is the rightful owner of the 9 shirt for France.

I have the photo of the gouging incident. Dupuy went at Ferris twice in the face, Ferris tried to get the attention of the ref but he was having none of it and then it came to blows.

Ah, Hook was making the observation that Shaggy was very silly to grab the lads head given that the gouging is so high profile, prick practically shouts across him "HE ISN'T GOUGING THOUGH" or summat. Hook obviously exasperated now has to outline what every non-retarded human who could hear it had already understood.

WRT Dupuy Hook pointed out that its not just the "big bad french" as the commentators had practically given birth about it, Prick again starts shouting. This time about how long jennings got etc. Bit hazy now.

It was kind of like tabloid journalism. Shouting at George before he finished his point making it sound like he was saying something else.

The man is a moron, and his manners make the lads who had go's at pat kenny look pious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,186 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

I had thought Ferris's comments in relation to the gouging made no sense if he was talking about Dupuy (I missed the game). Two potential citings for gouging in one game?

I echo similar anti-McGurk sentiments. I can't stand him. He is the sole reason I can't watch RTE analysis.

  • had to lol at the independent's writing.
The pair are likely to be fingered by the citing commissioner

Also RE: ellisalde and Yachvilli, France have an embarrassment of riches at scrum half

Up on the ERC site now too, both cited.

They are both F***ed and quite right. Dupuy made sure he made contact with the eye, Ferris did a bit of a Given to the ref but he wont get away with that, he will do very well to only get 12 weeks, and a bit hit from Ferris the next time they meet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,745 ✭✭✭laugh

Its a sign of how good Ferris is that he got gouged a total of three times.

    Sad but true.

only way to stamp this out is to give minumum 26 week bans rising to 3 years

still horrifies me to see how little Burger got for his gouge on Fitz, had he been sent off that test was ours..plus he deserved a 6 month ban.

Looking at the pictures I reckon thats the high end of the scale for both. Fair dues to Ferris in the interview, he just wants to play rugby and get on with - no bitchin, no moaning, just get it sorted and eye gouging is not on, class player

That picture is shocking! The way the jersey is stretched just shows how mush pressure he's putting on his finger. Clear as day, I hope he gets a lenghty ban

It's very hard to tell exactly what's going on in a photo imo, that one of Attoub gouging just looks bizzare imo. Was there prolonged contact with the eye? Was Attoub looking at what he was doing? How on earth is the jersey caught on his finger? I think a video would clear things up a good bit. Looks terrible anyway from the picture.

at the time I didn't agree with the Jennings citing/ban. I took the time to read the reports from both hearings and the rules are suitably ambiguous to allow the committees find against someone if they feel there was carelessness.

Which is fine, that's all Jennings was found guilty of. So the bar is set there.

IMO Dupuy can be seen deliberately assaulting Ferris's eyes twice, having established the ref is not looking. There is a definite pincer move for the eyes.

As a first offence he should be gone for the season.

The second incident I'd like to see footage. But even if accidental it's a 3 month ban given the precedent. And given the obvious force, the way his hand is shaped, then I'd suspect it will many more months than that.

Without a video it's hard to tell if it wasn't accidental though.

I'm going to wait for the hearing. If you look at the photo of Quinlan on Cullen it looks just as bad but the hearing found he didn't deliberately gouge, which I'm sure plenty of people were happy to accept.

Lets not get carried away. Remember we have had 3 Irish players in the last 18 months banned for eye gouging, one being particularly heinous. He who casts the first stone etc.

I think its going to take someone losing their sight to an eye injury before this is taken seriously by the governing bodies. If they set a precedent by banning someone (dupuy or the next guy) for the maximum time possible for each individual incident. For example in dupuys case he could be done for both times. It might end someones professional career but then players might think twice before going near the eye area.

At first glance that looks like Ferris 'diving' backwards but in fact if you look closely, Dupuy actually has him by the headgear and is yanking his head backwards.
Well done Fez for not lamping out and letting the officials do their thing.

Is there a date set for hearings?

Granted a single frame photo can paint a very slanted version of events but that shot does look very bad for Attoub.

That being said it looks much worse Dupuy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,200 ✭✭✭kensutz

From where I was photographing and looking at it up close, Dupuy went for Ferris twice. He looked at him, grabbed his face and then had another go for his face again. Couldn't see Attoub going for Ferris which you can see in the photo on the BBC site. It's was a sly gouging attempt and he was caught, Dupuy was blatant.

    Shaun Edwards has some pretty strident views on this;

    http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12321_5772150,00.html

Must say I think rugby union has gotten a little bit precious about foul play of late, but I think this is one of the most heinous cases I've seen since Trev Brennan launched a Hai Karate into the stands at Toulouse.

Incidentally, another thought, why is it that rugby union seems to be suffering something of a mini epidemic of theses gougings when in rugby league its virtually unheard of?
