It hurts like hell

Right, so I'm very unfit and I've been out of the gym for about a year. Even then I was only at it for about 2 months.

I remember the pain and what not in my muscles the next day but this hurts like hell.

I went on Friday and I did about 30 mins of various weights before then doing some threadmill and bike.

Then I jumped in the pool and floated around for a while and then into the hydrotherapy pool where I just relaxed for about half an hour.

I spent most of yesterday in bed and today but my arms hurt like hell. Raising my arm up hurts in the shoulder / upper arm area.

Any ideas? Is this normal? Should it still be bothering me this bad now?

    Thanks

Yeah, if you're very badly unfit I'd say that kind of muscle pain is normal enough and it's called DOMS (you can google that). Sounds like you've just overdone it. Next time try to eat some carbs and protein after working out and take it a bit handier. You'll adjust quickly though.

Also make sure to stretch before and after your workout... I get terrible DOMS if I dont stretch.

The guy in the gym didn't mention anything about stretches?

Same thing happened me last week. Found out (too late) that hot bath with epsom salts is good for relief.

So it'll be normal enough to go back for a second session now with some pain in the muscles and it should ease over time then as I get fitter and my body adapts to it more?

Essentially, just make sure you stretch!!!

When I go back to the gym after a period away from it (months/years) my muscles hurt like a f****r for a few days afterwards. I've been in a situation where I've done weights and for the next day or two, I can't stretch my arms out straight they're so stiff and sore.

Or I've done bench presses and my chest muscles have been so sore I can't put shirts on without pain.

What I do is leave it for a few days before going back to the gym. Try and avoid any exercise that causes discomfort. And when the pain goes away, head back to the gym then and you can do the exercises and you won't be sore the next day.

I for one don't stretch before exercising. I usually do some light cardio just to warm myself up but thats it. I do stretch my legs and stuff afterwards though usually, especially if I've been doing a new exercise and I don't want my legs to be so sore that I'm walking as if I'm on stilts :)
