    Hi all,

With the new bike scheme available in my place of work, i will be buying a bike fairly soon in which i can spend up to €800. Problem is im unsure what bike to buy. I will be buying from halfords and my first problem is making a decision which bike to go for. Mountain or racer bike?..Second problem is this will be the first time on a bike for a while and with myself still driving a car for a few years now, i see how dangerous cycling can be so any saftey tips on the road especially in these winter months..

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you're not sure which bike to buy mountain or racer you shuold consider a hybrid (flat bar racer).Don't confine yourself to halfords,i'm sure your employer would be happy to deal with any reputable bike shop.

On safety after of course knowing the rules of the road, being seen is the best way to stay alive.Familiarise yourself with the bike before you head off into traffic.

Similarly, if you're not sure whether to buy a motorbike or a car, a three-wheeled vehicle is an excellent compromise.

all of which hasn't got you much closer to an answer!

http://wiki.boards.ie/wiki/Buying_a_bicycle is a reasonably substantial list of potential machines to start considering!

What do you want the bike for?
    on road / off road
    distance you expect to travel
will you require panniers for lugging changes of clothing around?
