Refund from Irish Rail

I was amongst the lucky number delayed for almost 5 hours after the Dublin-Limerick train broke down earlier today. The experience has put me off train travel for the foreseeable future. Am I therefore obliged to accept the refund in the form of travel vouchers that I will never use, or have I any grounds to ask for a refund in cash/back to my credit card?

Over 2 hours late = Full refund.

I don't think you're obliged to accept vouchers.

Rail Users Ireland, might have more concrete info.

Irish Rail aren't obliged to offer a refund and are entitled to offer vouchers.

pretty sure they are obliged, something about getting all those grants from EU means they have to listen to standards. 2 hours is full refund as far as i know.

There is some EU legislation that states that compensation for travel delays has to be given in the form of a cash refund but Irish Rail are exempted for five years from that. It was due to come into force on January 1st next.

Thanks for your replies. I'm going to send in a letter along with the refund request form so fingers crossed they will give me the cash.
