Hands up here who can ride a bike!

Apparently I'm a bit odd. My friends want to organise a trip around Ireland on bikes in the Summer. I hate the idea. Because it's in Ireland and I want to go somewhere sunny but also because I can't cycle a bike.

I never learned. Think I had a bike as a kid but it had those extra small wheels on the side.

Is anybody else here the same as me? Or did I really miss out? :P

You can with no hands.

I never learned either. The state my road was in if I tried riding a bike on it I would have broken every bone in my body.

I know a few others, it is not uncommon, although its rarely discussed.

Someone should fill the niche and set up adult learn to cycle centres.
They should disguise them as brothels though, just in case someone sees you going in.

Nope, i've never learned either. I don't specifically know why, I just never did. It's never come up other than when on holiday with friends and they wanted to take a bike tour

I'm 25 now, i've told myself a few times that i'm going to have to learn by the time I ever have kids at least...

I never learned properly because it feels so weird. I never really needed to use one either though because I jog and walk alot.

Yeah, as moonflower said, it's not that hard. Maybe I will learn someday.

If you can sit upright and bend your legs, then you can cycle a bike. The only reason new cyclists fall off is nerves. It's actually incredibly easy to stay upright.

Balance comes with pace. Move the bike faster and balance comes naturally.
Also, keep your eyes looking ahead not down.

Are you all from towns and cities with public transport laid on and everything close by?

I'm betting if you were from a rural area you'd be cycling everywhere by the time you started school.

Cycling becomes like walking after a while...you still need balance, you just don't realise it. I cycle long distances in good weather, would love cycle around Ireland. Wanna swap friends?

Oh yeah, you missed out big time amigo. Cycling is the mode of transport of the future, when oil runs out

No I grew up on a farm outside a small town in rural Galway. Do you ride a high horse as well as a bike? :P

I used to live with a guy who repeatedly tried to teach me to learn, to be honest I got awful embarrassed about it when it was being raised like that. Not in conversation, but thinking about actually learning now as an adult... One of those things that "has to be done" I suppose... The amount of times you hear stabiliser jokes though

It's just in rural areas people may be cycling more. You know, the closest shop and the school are a few kilometers away.
So I though the OP may be from a city.

Nah where I grew up was 4-5 miles from the nearest town.

They're sound just hate adventure and attempting to do something that people don't normally think to do. They're not the kind of people who jump into the water on Christmas Day, for example.

I remember the first time I cycled my new bike. I was about 7 and my neighbour (guy in his teens) said that he would hold onto the carrier part at the back to stabilize the bike. So there I was peddling away and steering thinking that yerman was stabilizing it and I glanced back and the ****er was standing miles away laughing. Then I crashed.

Have to admit, at times you do feel like you're at a bit of a loss. Like, I live in Dublin now, and i'd like to get around a bit more freely and see a bit. Not having a car and relying on public transport is bothering, I have a bit of a romantic notion of hopping on a bike and getting around a bit. Very handy with the new bike scheme too (as in, tax relief on bikes for work, as well as the scheme around Dublin central).

That's another thing actually. I'm terrified by the idea of cycling in town (Dublin, for Frada) Anytime I'm on a bus and see the cyclists go in and out between cars and buses I freak out. I think it looks really dangerous. Maybe that's what's putting me off learning.

OK, in all seriousness, the only reason people have difficulty with learning to cycle is that they go really slow at first (sort of like how learner drivers drive at 0.1km/h on the roads). With cycling, it is much easier to balance if you are going fast.

Also, gently pull the brakes. If you pull the front brakes too hard, you will go over the handlebars, if you pull the back brakes to hard, a child dies you could skid.

But you have plenty of time to learn!

I was like the OP until May where I decided I would give it a shot and try to learn, I got to the stage where I can kind of do it but just wouldnt fancy doing it in public or somewhere I would havnt have much room to play with
