Laptop running slow and freezing

I have recently got the mobile broad band on my laptop but in the last few days my laptop has become extremely slow and keeps freezing. Im worried this could be due to something downloaded from internet onto my laptop. Could there be unwanted processes/programs running in the background that may be causing this? Really need help as it is so frustrating just being on the laptop at the minute. Thanks.

quickest way to check is to Ctr+Alt+Del and pull up the Task Manager. Look at the processes tab and you can see what programs are using up how much processor time.

Do you have any security installed at all? does this still happen when youre offline and the modem is not attached?

as above, go into performance and see if the processor is maxed out to 100%

to be honest i havnt tried the laptop without the internet yet as im on it a good bit this weather. i have avg antivirus and its up to date.

i have gone into the processes but the trouble is im not too sure which are the ones that are supposed to be there and vice versa. there are a good few running but not sure which ones to kill.

AVG has a utility on it called the linkscanner/resident shield. this is an awful resource hog and what it does essentially is virus scans an entire webpage before it will allow your browser to load it. This may actually be the freezing you are experiencing. You should be able to disable this in AVG options. Browsers like Firefox have their own method for warning you of reported attack sites which use virtually none of your system resources.

And if youre wondering if a process should be there or not, just google the name of the process, like dwm.exe and 99 times out of 100 you will be able to figure out what it is from that.

When in the processes tab on task manager, there sould be a two digit number beside everything (00-99) (i havnt seen mine hit 100)
just list here what has the highest numbers, also check the number beside it (ram usage) and list which is using the post

from the list's someone sould be able to work out whats wrong for you and which processes are just draining you CPU/RAM or whatever else it could be
