Pick my Christmas Game Poll! (Exciting...!)

Ok, since I'm getting a ps3 for Christmas with a few games, I've decided to use the money in my big box of change (tm) to get one more.

Help me decide between a few! I want something a bit different to the average shooter type, and I've picked up killzone, uncharted 1 and cod4mw2 so far, so stuff like resistance I'll get to in the future. And I'm only going for stuff for €30 or less.

    Borderlands
    Folklore
    Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
    MGS4
Rathcet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
    Batman: Arkham Asylum

    Anything else I should consider?

Let the fates (people here...) decide!

Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
Another vote for Borderlands... Its the first game that I've ever got all achievements/trophies in which must say something about how much I enjoyed it!

Batman would be a close second, followed by R&C

Not a fan of Motorstorm, and the demo of Motorstorm PD seemed like more of the same.
Folklore looks a bit "meh", and I'm getting tired of moaning about how ****e MGS4 was...

    It's gotta be Borderlands.

It's the one game I keep coming back to

And it's keeping me away from all my other games now including CODMW2

I haven't seen Uncharted 2 on this thread yet... What's going on, are the people of the playstation forum losing it???!

    :pac:

May be another shooter, but dear god, what a shooter...

    OP said €30 or less.

I'm in a similar boat to the OP, and the 2 games I'm buying, each one sub 30 btw.

    Valkyria Chronicles
    LittleBigPlanet

Cheers for the input! And the reason mw2 and uncharted 2 aren't there is because I already picked up mw 2 and the first uncharted so looking for some more variety... hence folklore making the list!

Kind of surprised MGS4 is being panned, the reviews of it seem to think it's gods gift to gaming or something, but I had heard some negative things from other real (non ign/gamepsot etc. staff) people before.

Is borderlands anything like fallout 3 other than the setting? I spent about a month as a vegetable because of that game so if its similar and not too much like other shooters I'd lean towards it now. Good old polls, sort everything out.

Oh yeah, forgot I picked up valkyria as well, knew I'd forgotten something in my first post. Can't wait to play that

    Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
I picked MGS4... purely because i'm the Grinch and I want to see you suffer like I did playing that game... muwhaahahahaa

I'd recommend God of War Collection if you can get your hands on it. At least 18 hours of gaming there. 20+ if you try out the in game and trophy challenges.

Arkham Asylum is very good. It won't dissapoint.

Borderlands gets old fast. Unless you have 3 friends on standby to play through it with you I'd give it a miss. It's really a game that benefits from coop. As a SP game it's average, you'd be as well to get Fallout 3 instead (if you haven't already played it)

They're two quite different games... Fallout 3 struck me as a FPS made by people who usually make RPGs, and as such the shooty parts of it weren't all that solid (even if VATs was **** cool!)

Borderlands was approached from the opposite direction, so comes across lacking in narrative, but plays superbly. There isn't any real reason to go exploring the landscape like in Fallout, so once you've finished all of the quests, there isn't really much to do apart from start again with your current character (the game gets harder and baddies scale up)

I'm making it sound crap here, but it really really isn't!
If you liked Fallout 3, you'll most likely enjoy Borderlands, but for different reasons...

MGS4 is far from perfect but it's still a great game worth playing. Uncharted 2 should definately be on that list, variety be damned. Dead Space also springs to mind, should be able to get it cheap enough these days.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,145 ✭✭✭Lands Leaving

Hmm... I do love me some exploring. I like a nice change of pace type game considering I'll be playing lots of MW2, so maybe borderlands wouldn't be ideal... but it still sounds good.

I guess they don't make too many slow paced games where I could enjoy the environment and such for the newer consoles. Something like a broken sword would be cool. I played a demo of arkham asylum and like it, but it seems kind of linear at the same time. But then as L31mr0d said, borderlands is better co-op and I don't know how committed to a game online I'd be that wasn't like call of duty, where you just play a few matches and logoff.

Is there anything I'm missing here? It's kind of a toss up between borderlands and Batman at this stage. And they're neck and neck!

Infamous €22.99 in HMV, well it was a little while ago don't know about now

I would not recommend Folklore whatso ever I found it to be boring and terrible.
As someone else said Dead Space. Now that is an amazing game was €17.99 in HMV last time I checked. Oblivion GOTY! If you were addicted to Fallout then you will be addicted to that. Batman is awesome too and don't believe the haters MGS4 is Great!

MGS4 is pretty good, but like all the MGS games, it not so much a game as a 50/50 movie game split, which some people loathe. Honestly, its worth it for the metal gear rex fight bit.

Some other games that are cross platform that I thought were amazing include dead space, prince of persia (its love / loathe again) and assassins creed. Wipeout HD fury is well worth it too.

    Borderlands
Voted for batman, favorite game of the year, followed by infamous, R&C is good too.
    Folklore didn't look great IMO.

Story heavy is a winner for me, I play games to push the plot forward or find out something cool (like in fallout or oblivion for example where you do subplots and explore to find cool stuff in the gameworld)

And now mgs4 is making a late push... exciting stuff!

Borderlands seems to have fallen behind, kind of reflecting my waning interest after hearing there's no point to exploring and it's better co-op than single player. hmmmm.

    hmmm.

Pretty much have anything good thats on both platforms for the xbox and yeah dead space is something else, easily one of the best games in years for me. Way better than RE5.

    Cheers all.

Batman as it is only €22.99 in HMV, with Boarderlands a close second at €29.99 in Gamestop.

You could probally pick up both Virtua Fighter 5 and Sega Rally for under 30. Other I'd consider would be: Bioshock, The Orange box, Wipeout HD, Oblivion and Virtua Tennis 3.

    Borderlands
I agree with amjon, The Orange Box probably represents some of the best value I have ever seen in videogames, getting so much top gaming for so little.
Batman AA is the dogs, Oblivion is available now for a song, as is Fallout, although in both cases I am waiting for a preowned Game of the Year edition with the downloadabe content included, particularly in the case of Fallout 3.
COD:MW2 is amazing, although I reckon everyone who wants it has it by now.
Another cheap option for class gaming is Killzone 2, which is now platinum and is great fun.
Wipeout HD/Fury is another inexpensive title that wipes the floor with the competition, both as download and shelf title.
Also for the hardercore military gamer Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising is excellent, for those that tire of being hand led through Modern Warfare 2 pretty but linear levels, OF:DR drops you in the sh1te and lets you walk yourself into more of it and out again, it's fantastic.

    MGS4.

Pretty engrossing game, excellent gameplay and a pretty reasonable online mode. Single player is where it's at it though. Its not No.1 Bestseller for no reason.

Surprised so many don't like MGS4, one of the best games on PS3.
Agree with the comments on DeadSpace - brilliant game.
Have you tried Burnout Paradise - absolute class and you can pick it up for €20 in HMV.
What about COD: WAW I know some don't like going back to WWII again but the game has a fair few stand out moments and another you can get for €20

Folklore is a good game - but wait 'til you have your PS3 as there's two demos for it on the PSN. I'd easily recommend it.

    Borderlands
Batman is the way to go. You want a fun/ exciting game to play, its gotta be batman. I love every metal gear game, except the 4th. I'd stay away from it. Some cutscenes go on for about 20 to 30 min at a time, I wouldnt mind if they were good, but its really over the top convoluted story

I'd only recommend it if you are a really hard core metal gear fan. I thought I was until i picked it up :(

I'd recommend MGS4 if you want a heavier, more in depth (but still fun!) game and Arkham Asylum if you're looking for a more straightforward but incredibly addictive and fun game.

Will probably pick up both if AA is still reduced in HMV, otherwise I'll stick with Metal Gear for now and borrow Arkham from a mate who has it in a few months or pick it up if it goes down in price again

You never know, I could love it like some people seem to!

The poll must be followed. Batman first, then Metal Gear. Unless Batman is over €30 in a bricks and mortar. (No more credit card... sniff... poor thing went missing... in my house somewhere! Won't get a replacement till after Christmas!)

People would be upset if I ignored the poll. Can't have ill will with teh internets that's for sure! Bad karma man.
