How's everyone getting on with study/any study tips for me?

Library has been pretty busy the past few days, in there now myself, unfortunatley I keep getting the urge to get a cup of coffee or go stretch my legs for the 3rd time in one hour :(

My course has 6 exams in the space of 9 days it's a big load of balls to be fair.

Thats something some would recommend - taking a break regularly within an hour. Depends on the person really. Also, if your an IT Student try booking LB21 through the school office if you find studying in the library hard with noise/crowd.

Right well basically you can't ask for advice because basically it is all down to you and how you study. Everybody has their own way of studying. I myself tend to make unbelievable reams of notes and it is how i soak in the information. I'm actually after using two refill pads at the moment on notes. Other people tend to leave it down to the last minute to read over stuff half assed, whilst others are very lucky to not have to study and then you have those who ask others in the class for their summarised notes. And then you have those who don't study. A word of advice i would give to you and others is perhaps if you are still struggling to study you perhaps shouldn't be traversing forums here, leave that to people who have everything under control.

Good luck in the exams all.

now matter how bad you think your line up is, theres nearly always some poor soul that has it worse.
imagine 6 or more exams in a row? the thought scares me.....

No, I am deadly serious. Iv attended at least 5 of these study courses - our school constantly put them on each year and forced us to attend. There is no "set guide" but there are general advise and tips.

Yes, but your missing the vital part. How is the OP supposed to know what method works for him, if he does not know whats out there? There are common, and not so common, study patterns that may help. So he is fully entitled to ask. Study seminars and books are not out there if they never worked.

Indeed other advise that can be given includes how to manage time, keeping on top of assignments and studying/preparing early. There normal, standard and not so self specific methods.

I absolutely despise people who come in here and use the "get of the forums and so some study" line. Its horrible, rude, selfish and arrogant. Incredibly cocky because its obviously coming from someone who feels in control and is oblivious to how other people may feel or do things. Plenty of people take breaks and head onto discussion boards, blogs, news site, go for a walk or take a jog. During study week/exams/college terms people should not be expected to "lock themselves away" and never be seen again until its all over.

So, perhaps drop he preaching here and go somewhere else with the "I'm great" attitude. It wont wash here. Nor will hidden personal attacks in your posts.

You've attended five, sorry but in all the time i know you i have not seen you attend one. If you are talking about study for secondary school and back then you'll need a reality check because the minute amount of work required for secondary level education cannot be compared to the workload we receive now which is monumental as you well know.

I haven't missed the important part and don't think because you attend 5 seminars that you are entitled to preach either. I never recommended anything and i advised of possible styles of study available. To be honest them study seminars don't work. They simply don't and are a money racket. A person will find their own way of retaining information themselves not by being told how to. All you have to do is think about how you remember the things most important in your life and apply that to how you study. It doesn't take a genius or a highly paid instructor talking through his arse to tell you that, and that's not just my opinion but the opinion of the class i'm in as i had this discussion in first year when they tried to teach us how to study.

Time management is definitely an extremely important area. Keeping on top of assignments and limiting your other commitments and extra curricular activities, such as unnecessary participation in groups that take up too much time. Some times time management will be harder to do than others, especially in years with focus on projects such as ours. Mid-term presents a great time to surmise the first six weeks work which is what i normally do to lower the workload but this year didn't manage to as iteration reports were due for our projects.

The simple matter is, and this isn't going off topic, if you are on an internet forum you ain't studying what you are supposed to be studying. It is not a cocky thing to say but rather it is common sense as anyone who isn't addicted to boards would agree. I agree people take breaks, they are well needed but there are some people who live here if they have access to a computer with internet access. That, quite simply and factually is a blatant waste of time and there is no arguing against that. You hit the nail on the head when you said I feel in control at the moment, well almost, and wouldn't that make me qualified to deem what would be one of the correct avenues of many available as study techniques. People very rarely lock themselves away, they just try to maximize their productivity during study week which really should be a week to look over your notes you summarized on an ongoing basis through the term.

I don't have an I'm great attitude, my attitude in the original post was very much of the nature that i'm sure the OP would be better off finding what helps them retain information by themselves rather than listening to any of us here. Now read whatever you want into my original post but i made a little light hearted quip at yourself in my original post and then proceeded with an informative post by my reckoning, albeit that is open to interpretation. There was no hidden attack in my original post and let's not forget personal attacks and posting personal information online about others isn't my forte now is it, more suited to yourself. And please dispense with the warning i received for absolutely no violation, and i'll expect a pm with an apology for insinuating i am arrogant, cocky, selfish, rude. Thank christ you don't know me very long so :p The ones I attended were focused on Leaving Cert and then we had two in 6th year about college. Iv been given similar information from the college in first year. Iv checked with reality, there is no update available and all is okay.

I haven't missed the important part and don't think because you attend 5 seminars that you are entitled to preach either. Even if I attended a thousand seminars from the gods of education - what I said was common sense. Instead of a blanket ban on helping, you can help by giving some suggestions on methods that work for people. That always helps, and that was my point my old friend ;) Some people go into college with no clue whatsoever on how to approach it all and these seminars/guides can actually help. Not everybody can brush it of with "Ah sure, All you have to do is think about how you remember the things most important in your life and apply that to how you study. It doesn't take a genius or a highly paid instructor talking through his arse to tell you that"

A blanket ban on "after college activities" is never advisable, IMO. Iv always found them a break and relief from a busy college day or week. Not everybody in their final year or in college can handle the pressure so its always good to join new clubs/societies and makes no friends and take a break from it all rather then being the boring old loser who sits at home and complains bout others having fun/college. Time management does come into play and thankfully for me anyway, iv kept my role balanced but thankfully it never became an issue or a concern as the activities never conflicted. hen again, some would not dream of such as they would just worry about college even more. Depends on the person probably.

We have a constant problem in this forum with that type of attitude and results in PMs being fired my way and reported posts from people offended. Don't comment on the OP for posting here if you can not safely say he is posting on his break.

You were warned, as it said in the PM, about the comment about people studying elsewhere. Of all people, you should know exactly the procedure (as a former mod) with dealing with infractions/warnings. Keep it of the forum and stop making stuff up.

i actully prefer studying at home, ive only been studying one subject, its got a high failure rate, and even higher on the repeats (only 45% passed last year in december, and like 1 person out of 7 in the repeats or something), im not too bad with my other subjects, had decent CA marks, know whats comming up, so its just night before revision really.

I know the feeling. Some people freak when I say it but I cant study at home - far to many distractions. I get much better work done when im on my own or with little distractions. Just been doing this so far this year instead of the usual. I frequently tend to use white boards to assist in revision rather then writing out hundreds of pages of notes (which I do sometimes also, depending on the subject).

i suppose its a good idea if there are too many people at home etc, i actully live alone in waterford, so would have to cook for myself etc, go shopping, but like it feels good to know i dont have to do that, besides my brother has exams as well, and TV is downstairs etc, so its all good :D, the only thing that distract me from time to time is boards.ie and bodybuilding.com misc forums haha

Maths is tough enough, that would be my downfall. Unfortunately its the subject you cant revise... you must practice practice practice, with the lecturer in question she has a habit of changing the paper dramatically which will throw you off. Hopefully it will all go well, it's just difficult to know what to expect in the exams

Had (still have!) the exact same problem. Sad really, I always thought lecturers would do their best to help out students rather then make a tough subject even tougher. Just gotta keep battling it and hope one day all will go well.

Yeah, happy enough they're on before Xmas, just get them over and done with.
Prefer studying at home meself, get much more done. People say there's too many distractions at home, I don't get that. There's just as many distractions down in the library, ya can't help but get distracted when somebody moves, walks past, opens a book etc! Find it hard to study with people around me too so I'd rather be in the comfort of my own house.
First exam starting tommorow, 4 more then after that. Confident enough I'll pass them all! :)

All of the above and numptys forgetting seat numbers and invigilators just letting them sit pretty and not move:rolleyes: Then cue what felt like 20minutes of on/off deliberations between said numpty and the invigulators.
And who in the name of God set the clocks in the main hall, there nearly 5minutes early....just another source of panic in the last few minutes of an exam.

Anyone else do the Basic Financial Accounting exam today?

What a joke! Why did they wait until 25mins+ in to give out the answer book with the ruled out margins?!?!

I spent the first 5mins flicking through thinking I was missing something, or thinking that we didn't get the booklet. Some people even began ruling out the accounts themselves.
When I asked after 10mins I was told they would be given out "in a minute." It was more like 15mins later, and I didn't get it finished in the end!!!

I did that exam back in first year. Back then, the accounting paper was included in the exam paper at the end. Out of interest, who are the lecturers on the course? I'd try sending off an email telling the lecturers about it, since they most likely won't know.
If they hear this they may (I stress may) decide between them to be more lenient with the marks.

    How does the compensation work?
Do you have to get over 35% is it?
How many subjects can it be used on?

you need to get 35% in one subject atleast and 60% in another (some sources say its 50%) can be used on 2 subjects per semester, and after first year, you can only compensate subjects from the same semester (i.e in first year you can get 35% in 4 subjects, and get over 60 in 4 subjects throughout the year and be OK, but after first year, they must be compensated for in the same semester) and also, you can only compensate 5 credit subjects (this is the case in most irish uni's and so far all of my subjects have been 5 credit modules dont know how it works in other subjects)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 430 ✭✭Sparkles:)

i thought you had to get over 70 to compensate?!

think i might pass mine on compensation, but thinking back to what i wrote 35% would be a blessing

As a general rule, the years tend to get much much much harder!(no sarcasm intended)
First year = doss. can do absolutely nothing and still pass
Second year = quite a lot of work. will pass with a nice bit of study
Third year = extremely difficult. major cutting back on the number of drinking sessions
Fourth Year = not there yet. I'm prepared for the worst though!:D

I thhink thats really an, it gets easier because you have the foundations and you're not completely oblivious to taking notes, structuring answers, how to study and when to study... the subject matter on the other hand can get harder but the ablity to cope with it makes it easier ya know?!

I know i found second year easier, but the content was harder... wish i started studying sooner... even the studyweek was wasted...

We've went from having 4 exams to having 6 exams with all 50% CA and 50% exam, and the CA was pretty tough in itself,

Lads i swear to god im actually going to punch one of them invigualators!!
Exams are stressful enough without them constantly distracting you and making noise!!!
Im a 4th year exams are stressful enough without this!
I was in f 06 there last week for an exam, first of all there was 4 of them in the one classroom, all of them wearing heals on there shows that woke the dead every time they took a step then, they have to have there little chats every 2 mins, also one fella came in a caused a scene because the he didnt know where he was sitting, the invidualator hadnt a clue how to deal with this, so this went on for 5 mins!!
Then yesterday i was in the main hall, same deal again with them walking around and making noise talking etc, but then just to take the complete p*ss one of their phones started ringing, it was in a press at the back of the hall, she was at the top, she stomped down the hall and slammed open the press and started looking for it!
How the f*uck are you supposed to concentrate with these idiots around????
    (rant over:mad:)

I guess i'm very fortunate I haven't had that experience, however I do see your point, i'm sure some of the students there were up half the night the night before studying for the exam they are taking. God knows how much they are getting to just stand there for the day, another thing that irritates me about them is, in two of my exams, she just keeps saying "No Talking" she said this about every 5 seconds, people are taking their seats and walking up and down the main hall, of course there is going to be noise, perhaps they need to be reported, that woman in particular regarding the phone that's just a disgrace especially when 4th years are taking exams

I don't think that's one persons mobile phone. That phone usually goes off so i'm sure there's probably a main phone line there or something. Ridiculous though that it goes off during the exams.

To be fair, some of them are grand, but there are some of them who you wonder why they are there. Whoever has taken up my paper seemed grand, and they would remind you to fill out something if you missed something,

What I don't like, is when they come around to take down your seat number, name, course and year, that can be very distracting especially if you were in the middle of a question, you could loose something you had in your head very easily i.e. the 4th part of "List 4 types of....." etc,

I think the attendance should be taken when you leave or when you sit down, just before the exam, not during.

Exactly i dont think they need to take attendance at all!! all they should do is look at your witcard as they pass take a quick glance to see it matches you and tick your name off, none of this disturburbing us bullsh*t!! that rules out the "having someone else there instead of you malarkey" and gives attendance figures

    Yeah those invigualators are useless!
I was in the Main Hall, and the only thing more annoying than the squeaky desks and chairs was this invidualator constantly looking in over my shoulder whenever she passed.

The desks are a joke. Mine made a squeak everytime I moved the pen on the page!!! Anyway, half way through an exam an invidualator comes over, thinking I was cheating, saying that the squeaking noise was coming from my phone!!! I pointed out my phone to her, turned off and on the floor, then squeaked the desk in her face!
She gave me a stupid look, as If I'd done something wrong! and asked me to move seats!
So annoying, made me completely lose concentration.
