Just looking at a particular site and it seems that the final stages of the Nagra 2 switch off is well under way.

Does this mean there will be loads of extra spare space on cable now?

Encryption has nothing to do with available spectrum its just a security feature.

2010 looks like UPC will start to make use of the available space with the introduction of DOCSIS 3, VOD, plus more channels.

Your right and your wrong I think if they have the channels on the system twice in two different encryptions switching off one should free up a lot of space?

DOCSIS 3 can't wait should ease contention at peak times.
    Video on demand nice.
    More channels always welcome.

No, the different encryptions are layered simultaneously on top of the same, single video/audio stream. The bandwidth savings are negligible.

As DingDong says, you can run as many encryption schemes as you like on the one single stream. Very common for satellite channels on the continent where there is more than one operator which each use their own encryption system. One satellite and one stream serves all the operators and whatever encryption they use, instead of having to have the same channel uplinked seperately for each operator. The security of the stream is only as good as the "weakest link" encryption though!

DOCSIS 3 may only be offered to customers on the higher tier broadband packages. Most subscribers will need new modems for it. Chances are they'll leave lower tier customers on DOCSIS1.1 as present, and shift the higher tier to DOCSIS 3.0.

VoD hasn't got any concrete plans at the moment, there are talks with a few potential content providers but nothing has been signed yet to the best of my knowledge! There is work underway along the lines of expanding digital "interactive" content such as the EuroNews red button service however.

Also rumours from the mill that ITV has been tested on and off on the Dublin network, and with channels being flipped around the EPG, perhaps a sign of more channels to come?

Imagine UPC will be trying to add more HD Channels - the line is weak at the moment with no Sky channels carried - if E4HD,Living HD & MGM HD launch as planned they may be added to the UPC line up sooner rather then later.

VOD - depends on much UPC are going to charge
