Heart Rate Monitor for jogging?

    Hi there,

I have searched boards and have found a few great threads on HR monitors and have tried to understand the differences between the garmin and the polar etc. It's a present for my OH, and I think that the polar is better for what he is looking for - simply to track heart rate and keep an eye on progress.. and keep info on distance too if possible, get a better idea of how training is going.

He doesn't do triathlons or marathons or anything like that - just jogging a few times a week.

The thing is there are so many models in and around the price I am looking at - circa 100 euro.

I've never owned one but hopefully someone here who does can recommend what they use to me? This is a link to a whole lot of them - hence my confusion!!

    Appreciate any help!

I have an older version Polar and a fairly new Garmin (405) - the big difference between mine being the GPS on the Garmin which gives you your speed/distance and the Garmin also has the ability to set up training sessions based on heart rate or speed, my Polar just has a stopwatch and heart rate monitor so you have to do all the thinking yourself while training, not something I'm very good at! Polar is waterproof though, so great for using in tris, whereas the Garmin isn't. Another good thing about the Garmin is you can replace the battery yourself (probably why it isn't waterproof) whereas you have to send the Polar off for a new battery to be fitted.
If your OH is only jogging a HRM might only be a nice gadget to have, they only really come into their own when you are aiming to peak for a race or certain period as then you split your training beforehand into different Heart rate Zones (depending on your max). So if you're buying one, maybe you should enter him for a race as well - careful though, you could get an addict on your hands!

i've a garmin forerunner 50 (and they come in around 100 euros) and would struggle to find anything good to say about it. I got mine last Xmas and by Feb the battery was gone. I thought maybe the battery was run down while it was waiting around in some shop/warehouse........but I put a new battery in there about 2 weeks ago and its back down to low battery again. Pairing the watch with the HRM wasn't easy either and I don't find it that useable at all. So while I'm not really offering you an answer to your question, personally i'd stay away from the Garmin Forerunner 50.
