Audi A4 1.8T or 2.0 TSI Opinions?

    2005/2006 car.

    Trying to find a good one here but any I see are much more expensive than a uk import with VRT included

    Anyone had one of these? How was it?

    Driving/performance/living with day to day/service costs etc?

    Is it worth going for the 2.0 TSI as these are more common in the UK and most have leather!!! apart from road tax increase anything else I should know?

    I would think about the TDI 170 but any posts I can find relating to the a4 seem to be issues with the diesel so Ill probably avoid

    I'm considering buying one of these as well.

    The 2.0 TFSI produces 200bhp. Get it retuned and you're looking at 260 to 270bhp.

    By all accounts, 35mpg is very possible out of this car if driven sensibley. However, 200bhp is a lot of power going through the front wheels so you might consider getting a quattro version. QUattro knocks about 2mpg off fuel efficiency.

    On the other hand, I guess you could always get the 1.8 and considering tuning it up to 210bhp with a €300 tune. Get better mpg out of it.

    +1 on the quattro - wouldn't touch either in FWD, delivery of power is all over the shop IMO.

    I've been getting 28-30 with a mix of city & motorway driving.

    Though in saying that I wouldn't swap it :D
    ......I would love quattro but you can't that in the Skoda :(

    Really ? I posted a question on an Audi forum and the concensus was a standard remap would get you up around those figures. I believe base power is 200bhp. (Same engine as the GTi IIRC).


    Just another thought. The way things are going with road tax.
    - You can't buy a large diesel as the sell on value of diesels bought before July 2008 will collapse due to the new motor tax regime
    - You can't buy cars with petrol engines greater than 2.0 due to very high taxes and low mpg.
    - A 2.0 Turbo has tax of just over €600 per year, delivers good power, can be tuned well due to the turbo and gives good enough mileage in respect of power. I think this engine accross the entire VAG range will be sought after in years to come.

    As I cant find any good clean examples here in Ireland with low mileage Ill be importing.

    Ive just checked the VRT and its crazy for the quattro, road tax is engine size based but the VRT percentage is based on C02.

    So has anyone driven the standard non tuned 1.8t and/or 2.0 petrol?

    Which is a better car? - forgetting about the ability to tune which I wont be doing as IMO tuned cars suffer greater depreciation.

    Any know mechanical reliability problems? Also is there any chance of selling a 2.0 pre 2008 petrol car in a year or so?

    1. As with all Audis, you may get some problems with the electrics.

    2. The tax on a 2.0 TFSI is much lower pre 08 than after June 08. You'll find it very tough to sell a post June 2008 high powered petrol car.

    Thats a very general statement and wrong in many cases.

    The tax on newer 3.0 petrol bmws is down when based on emissions. The tax on my08 1.8Tfsi A5 is down based on emissions.
    And as someone said above, Dont touch the front drive versions with over 200 bhp. I might sound like a broken record at this stage, but even with 170 bhp in my A5, it cannot put down the power at all. It an absolute joke to be honest. Front passenger wheel tramping like crazy at even small amounts of power. And it has done this from new. Its a characteristic dont ya know!
    Get a quattro. I had an older quattro TT 180bhp. Brilliant solid car. It handled brilliant.

    Lads, I know someone who will be selling their '07 A4 1.8T Quattro with S-Line spec (163bhp) and half leather very very shortly due to family commitments and needing a bigger bus. It's low-avg mileage, Irish car and meticulously maintained.

    What age car are you referring to?
    2008 old model A4 200 bhp 2.0 Tfsi seems to be 184g co2.
    Newer versions are much better still.
    Edit: from Audi: Latest models - 211ps 2.0Tfsi quattro 169g co2 making it 470 approx to tax
    211ps 2.0Tfsi 154g co2 making it 300+ to tax.

    Now I know OP is referring to old model but you were saying that these cars from 2008 on will be hard to sell due to road tax. Its simply not true

    My Seat Leon 2.0TSI (200 bhp) has no problem handling the power. Solid as a rock. Does the Audi have sporty suspension?

    Standard suspension for the car but its relatively hard compared to your average saloon.
    If I try to pull out quickly from a junction for example, on any surface except loose chips, the front left wheel will just start to bang and hop off the road continually. Dont even need much power to do it. If I put someone in the passenger seat, all is well! Handles like a pig too tbh but handling and stability improves too with someone in passenger seat.
