How many of you consign the monthly Sky magazine directly to the recycle bin without even opening it.
Well, those of you who do had better open it this month (Dec '09) and read the letter on the reverse side of the address sheet because it tells of a new charge for the magazine from January 2010. The price will be €2.95.
If you don't want the magazine you need to phone Sky customer service and request that it be cancelled to avoid the charge being added to your subscription from January '10.

    €2.95 a month or €2.95 a year?

It's €2.95 per month (£2.20 in the UK). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think your monthly sky subscription will remain the same whether or not you want the magazine.

Even if it were 2.95 a year they'd still be overcharging for that heap of rubbish!

Full of coverage of the most pointless and unwatchable TV shows on the box.

And since they introduced HD and Sky+ every second paragraph in the bloody thing is a sledgehammer-style attempt to get you to "upgrade" (i.e. pay them more).

It gets landed in the bin as soon as it arrives.

Can someone please scan the letter and post it here? or post the details including the customer services number to call to cancel this? I moved house over 6 months ago but got an independent installer to fix a new minidish and didn't bother informing sky that I moved house as I was paying by direct debit! After reading this I remembered that I used to get the sky magazines at my old address and never even bothered about them.

Yeah but don't you get a credit on your account for the same price as the magazine so it doesn't matter whether you receive it or not it's no extra charge...

From the letter on the reverse of the address sheet.
"There will also be a change in the price this month . But don't worry, the cost is discounted in your monthly subscription so your total bill will stay exactly the same. The only thing you will notice is a bigger, better magazine every month with more about the TV, sports and movies you love. From 1 January 2010, the total price you pay for this magazine will be €2.95".
Maybe I'm getting it wrong, but it looks like to me that from January 1st I would be paying €2.95 for the magazine which as I understood was 'free' to subscribers
Having now cancelled the magazine will I now get a reduced subscription from 01/01/2010 as "the total price you pay for this magazine will be €2.95"
When I cancelled the magazine I checked with Sky customer service and have been told my subscription will remain the same, therefore it appears that if I didn't cancel, the 'payment' would stand and €2.95 would be added to my subscription from 2010.
Perhaps someone else would clarify with Sky and post here, I'm fed up with them.

It's exactly as I said in the previous post, if you get the magazine you get charged for it BUT receive a credit off your monthly bill.
If you don't get the magazine you don't receive the credit.

Apart from maybe helping save the planet and - if enough people cancelled it - letting them know just how crap it is....

Is this a low call number r a premium rate number. I have been wanting to cancel this mag for years. It goes straight in to the recycle bin and I think of the three that had to be cut down to generate it.

They don't sell this magazine in the shops, it's only for customers, so why do they even have a price printed on it anyway. Whatever price they print, it's still not worth it.

I read elsewhere that it is a tax avoidance ploy. Appearentlt Mr Murdoch can 'charge' all the credits given to us for giving away the 'free' magazine against his profits. He therefore can reduce his taxable profits by the cover price of the magazine multiplied by the millions of subscribers it is sent to.

Just rang Sky. Girl said that if i had a full sky subscription then i wouldn't be charged for the mag - only people using the box for freeview are getting charged apparently

Yes, there is also a VAT saving.

Subscribers in Ireland pay UK VAT on Sky Subscriptions.
Magazines are 0% rated for VAT in the UK.
By pretending to charge for the magazine, Sky save 44c per subscription per month on their VAT bill.

So the charge for the magazine is really ripping of the British tax man, not the subscribers. It's just everything else Sky rip us off on.

Aaah, I was wondering what their scam was with the 'free' magazine, thanks for clearing that up!

Cancelled Sky 2 months ago and they still send me the Sky mag.
Wonder if they will charge me for it now ?

    So lets get this straight.

No letter was sent to customers explaining this. Only mention of it was in a magazine which alot of people just bin.

So if I do not call Sky to cancel to I am charged €2.95 per month ?

Someone mentioned a credit on your account. Can somebody explain that as I do not understand.

Its irrelevant to you. Your subscription cost has not changed, nor will it, as a result of this. It is an internal mechanism used by Sky, the only reason they even bothered to put it in the magazine was to satisfy a legal technicality, it doesn't matter whether you know how much of your subscription is allocated to the magazine or not.

I still dont get it. Is it that you are saying €2.95 goes to the mag yet my bill doesnt increase so does that not mean my sub for tv has technically decreased by €2.95. I understand all money goes to sky but its just a way for them to pay less tax ?

It means your sub stays the same. Sky's accounts for tax purposes change, which means that they will be recording less income for TV and more for magazine. As far as Sky is concerned, it is none of your business what they do with your money once they get it, the only reason they published this is to satisfy their inland revenue that their income allocation for tax purposes is genuine.
