I'm looking to insulate my attic again as its not being done since the house was built many moons ago. I was looking on the B&Q website at the different insulations they have and thickness but not sure what i need?

The house is a 2 storie 3 bedrooms if that helps.

The more the better to a certain point.

I will be starting mine in a few weeks and I am going for 400mm (2 x 200mm) in the attic.

I was in B&Q just to have a quick look and saw they had both 200mm and 150mm. I was just planning on laying new insulation over the old using 200mm between the current joist that run in a vertial line. I wanted to know if its a good idea to roll then 150mm horziontally over the 200mm and lay down flooring in between the josist and if this would work or do you think it would be enough just laying 200mm down and covering it with the chipboard flooring B&Q have on offer?

    Condesation
Will form on top of any additional insulation used . So bearing that in mind dont place anything over , that -
    1. will suffer if it gets damp
    2. will prevent ventilation to disperse moisture away

So I would not store my original 1960's Spiderman comics up there . And only use flooring in slats - a little like the hot press shelving idea.

    Ventilation
Air must be adimitted at the roof overhang to help disperse condensation . Do not allow the additional insulation to choke off the ventilation at the pinch points . There are products avalaible to achive this .

In my opinion insulating to this standard is NOT a DIY job . You can't do it if you B+Q it .

Ok i never thought about the condensation, ventilation , good point. The house is a georgian style so in the attic the current insulation is layed down between the joist and it was done the same on all neighbouring houses. I was just planning on getting new installation 200mm and laying it down over the old stuff which speaking to a few people say it does no harm ( 34yrs old ). The attic is not used for anything except a water tank which sits up in it. I'm just basically looking for ways to keep the house that bit warmer and thought this even would be straight forward. I only saw the flooring they so the thought crossed my mind.

Do you not even think th above is straight forward enough to do with out rolling the 150mm and flooring? I need to do something with it.
