How many of us are men (or ladies) of leisure?

I'm just curious, I've had some form of job for half my life (I'm 26 now) and for the first time ever I'm signing on

If it was for these boards I wouldn't know how to pass my day but at least it didn't happen last year when we could even get broadband where I live

I'm sure you dont want to be on the dole as much as the other man or woman, the fact that you call yourself a man of leisure pisses me off. I work to put money in your hand, so dont dare think your getting it handy off my back.

The government should of cut the dole to €70, then it will give people like you a reason to moan.

If you are bored, try learn another language (it's fairly easy), or learn new skills online etc. I know a guy who worked for a company with no pay, but in exchange for training, experience and a damn good reference letter.

Christ would ya relax... Im on the dole and I sure as hell am not too fond of it. Looking for a job since I graduated in August and still feck all. Interviews here and there but nothing seems to stick.

If dole was cut back to €70 then im out of my flat and back home. Then im just a burden on the family back home and thats just as bad as getting the dole at what it is now, in my opinion.

    I assume you're 22/23.

Why do you feel the state (taxpayers) has an obligation to pay for your own personal accomodation ?

Because not everyone can move back in with their parents.

In fairness he did say he had been earning all his life, and as such (I assume), paying tax. He's contributed enough to allow for the state to look after him in tougher times. These times will pass, and he'll contribute again. That's why it's there.

I don't feel that they have a obligation. I'm in a unfortunate position I don't want to be on the dole and i'm trying my best to get off but it's just not happening. Do you not think its unfair to leave someone who is unemployed in the short term (i would imagine something turning up after christmas) to at least get an opportunity to get a job.

The money coming in from the dole gets me up to interviews (majority of which are in dublin on the other side of the country from me), feeds me and pays the rent.

Woah, chill the beans man, 'man of leisure' is a phrase from the dark days of the '80's when people were just desperate to put a sunnier spin on things

Of course I'd love to be working, as I said I've been working half of my young life and have 7 years third level education and it would be VERY NICE TO ACTUALLY USE SOME OF IT

I don't think many people want to be on the dole. Back in the 90's I had some trouble finding jobs and ended up with a string of ****e ones:
baggage handler / shuttling cars from on hire centre to another / fixing catering trolleys in a room with no windows by myself / etc. - no offence to anyone currently doing these jobs.

I'm lucky enough to be working at a job I love at the moment, but I have plenty of friends, who are both motivated and experienced, that still are finding it hard to get work. I'm happy to pay into the coffers for them and others.

For all you know, he has paid more tax in his life then you ever will. I love people coming on here and complaining about people on the dole. Most of the people on here wouldn't know a hard days work if it jumped up and bit them.

It's a recession, perfectly hardworking well qualified people lose their jobs and need some help. To finance this they paid tax during the good times. So you are not working to give him money. He is simply taking back some of what he put it.

    They don't.

The state gives him X money per week, it's his business how he uses it.

So as a result of you disliking his terminology, all people on the dole should be forced to live on €70 a week. Riiiight.

Still an inability to grasp that most people are on the dole not by choice and would love a job but just can't get one? Christ, I thought things would have changed since last spring...

He got a job out of it. He was fresh out of school with little qualifications and no experience. His chances of getting a job were quite low. I guess his employer was impressed with his commitment.

Well i would say in a lot of cases its simply students who recently graduated and cant find work. Now that a lot of people are out of work qualified people with experience are going for the same jobs that recent graduates would have took up before the r word. When your competing with this types of applicants you have no hope.

Woke this morning to two lovely rejections, god isn't life great...:(
