Ok so Im in my fourth and final year of an arts (history of art/architecture and classics) course in TCD and starting to worry about what comes next. It seemed like a good idea at the time but now, as with a lot of people and this type of degree, Ive no idea where to go from here.

Ive been playing with the idea of a postgrad to specialise in something but I havent figured out what that something is and I dont want to waste more time (four years of that has been enough!)

Ideas have been things like Public Relations, and Nursing/Social Care, or failing that maybe Teaching? Ive also been considering specializing in Tourism as its the area I work in at the moment. But I dont know what gives me the best job prospects or which field to go into.

My original plan was to work for awhile after college and see if this lead me in a specific direction, but now Im worried that I wont be able to find a job at all/thinking that I should make the most of the recession by getting a further qualification during the hard times

    Advice? Opinions?
    :D

Well you could look into doing a postgrad conversion course (law, HDip in Psychology etc...), teaching is gone to the dogs in this country, better off trying the UK. All else fails there's always TEFL.

Can you afford to do an intern or volunteer somewhere? For social work you'll definitely find an organisation in Ireland looking for volunteers, and if you look around those kind of organisations you might even find someone looking for a volunteer in their media/campaigns section (which'd hit the public relations bit). Check out http://activelink.ie/, there's a volunteering section there (and employment too!) where organisations post up openings. It's worth keeping an eye out for those areas.

I'd definitely recommend not going straight in to a masters. You're better off getting at least one year of experience doing something, and spending some time thinking about what you want to do then just leaping at something because you've got nothing better to do.
