Love Simple Minds and saw them in Croke Pk in '86 (God I'm old!). I know that's over 20 yrs ago but .....just thought they were pretty average on Wednesday. Felt Jim Kerr struggled through the big songs and if it weren't for the crowd belting the songs out it would have been a bit flat. Maybe they're just better in a big Stadium.......OMD on the other hand - really surprised me and I really enjoyed their set, short as it was. Never saw them live but remember them regularly on TOTP and they sounded exactly the same 20 odd yrs later. Think the years have been kinder to them than to Jim Kerr!

Did Simple Minds play much old stuff on wednesday? Pre-1983 quality like "Theme for Great Cities"? I must try see them next time they play over here.

Hey..actually...now that you mention it...you have a point....I think Jim Kerr found the stage to be on the small side....I remember them from Croke Park....showing my age too...what an amazing day..supported by Lloyd Cole & the Commotions...class act....

I was really impressed with the new Point though...excellent venue..the crowd were great craic at it.......!

BTW....I have the USB key with the evening's show on it if you are interested in it, i can give it to you. You can send me a USB key and I could upload them for you...FOC of course..! PM me if you like...

    cheers...

Lloyd Cole - there's a guy who still has the voice and presence he had in the 80's -whether it's Croke Park (remember that...fantastic gig) or Whelans. Would love to see him play the O2.....

OMD were great, though Andy McCluskey had to work very hard to get the crowd into it, and it didn't help that there was hardly anyone there when they started. People responded very well to the three singles from Architecture and Morality, in particular Souvenir, and to his trademark "geography teacher at a teacher training college disco" dancing during Maid of Orleans. The obligatory Enola Gay had the entire place up by the end of their set, so they left triumphant. A rare example of a support band who could have done an encore. I hope to see them back for their own show in 2010.

Great post! The quality of the video is pretty good. Was this a camera phone?

I have the recording from the night on a zip file if anyone's interested...

Since the concert, met a load of folk who were in Croker that night...many remember the lightening storm!
