Dead MBP Screen

    Howdie folks,

Was away for a few days and when I got home I had software update requesting me to do a restart for a java update. The laptop restarted, 'chimed' but the screen failed to come back on.

Tried an external monitor but that's saying there is no signal.

Reset the NVRAM and still no luck.

    It's a late '07 15" MacBook Pro, 2.2ghz

I'm at a loss with what to do, this is the second major problem I've had with it since it's warranty ran out and the last problem cost €400 to sort. Times are tougher now and I can't afford another expensive repair.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like the graphics 'card' is gone if no response from an ext monitor. Have you got an Nvidia 8600m GT?

If so, there's an extended warranty of 3 years on it due to common failures, you'll just need to bring it for repairs which takes around 5 days. I'd recommend Mactivate if you're in the Dublin area?

Spent 45 minutes on the phone to Apple with some tool who couldn't understand that his 'troubleshooting' tips were of no use to me as they all required me to be able to see what's ok screen.

They eventually agreed to send a courier to collect it and it's now in the capable hands of Mactivate. The guy on the phone in mactivate was very helpful and informative.

    Now, the waiting begins...

Let us know how you get on. You're definitely covered under the sale of goods act, since a MBP (considering its cost) should last longer than two years. Don't pay any money.

EDIT: Funny how they sent you a courier, since the last two times I contacted them they insisted I had to get the laptop to the repair shop myself.

How did this turn out? I'm in a similar boat.

Unfortunately this is a different issue, your's got a bang whereas mine, and the OP's, didn't.

There is a specific issue with graphics dying for no apparant reason and thus, there is an ext. 3 year warranty.

Sorry but the words "capable" and "Mactivate" do not belong in the same sentence...

Given experience getting a repair there, I beg to differ
