Always wondered what was going on there - guys with a big protruding belly but they have a six pack.

    Human Growth Hormone

Makes the organs grow as well as muscles, hence the distended stoamach

In some cases it could probably be visceral fat, but I think you are probably talking about pro bodybuilders

It's called a GH Gut 'Growth Hormone Gut' and happens when people take huge amounts of Human Growth Hormone. Don't know the full details but i think it causes their internal organs to expand in size?

Edit: Podge bet me to it :)

I usually notice it on wrestlers so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

OP do you have any pics of what you are talking about.

I'd say most people who saw me in a tshirt would probably consider that I would have a big gut but in truth it isn't actually that fat (ok maybe a bit as only the top of my abs are slightly showing) but I wouldn't have taken any HGH, truthfully I have always just put it down to doing loads of beltless squats so having a squaters gut is beneficial

You can have a protrouding belly if your posture's sh!t as well. Like mine. Really gotta work on correcting that, but effort!!

About a year ago when i was bulking up i noticed this happening to my stomach. I've never taken anything other than whey so i was wondering what was going on. Met a fitness trainer for the San Diego Chargers (American football) and he looked at my routine. Said that it could be that i was doing too much ab work as well as the big 3 lifts. I cut my ab work down to just the one day and just 2 exercises. And then it gradually went away. Cut for a while and bulked back up and now my belly has no protrusion.

It can also be from a build up of trapped air, or an enlarged stomach. or just very well developed abs,
most bodybuilders suck in their gut when ever they are on stage or doing a photo shoot.

theres also fat that can be behind muscle.

The HGH guys aside, as hanley said it can also be a posture problem, called anterior pelvic tilt or even more severe lordosis.

Caused mostly by having weak lower abs and weak transverse abdominus muscle. This coupled with very strong and stiff spinal erectors and glutes and inflexible hips causes your plevis to tilt downwards and the weak abs protrude, sort of like a distended belly. Its very common and can cause all sorts of complications with lifting later on if not sorted out. Strengthening the TA and lower abs and stretching the glutes, hips and lower back will pull you together again within a couple of months.

An other common issue is kyphosis, which happens when an overpowering chest and frontal shoulders coupled with a weaker back, lats, posterior delts and traps, pulls you forward into a hunchback posture.
