Why is the USI website blocked on campus?

If there is to be a vote on whether or not DCU will be joining the USI, surely we should be allowed to at least see this 'wicked' site.

It's blocked? That's pretty strange alright. Your best bet is to pop into the SU or CSD and ask why, outside of that drop them an email and see what they have to say.

More than pretty strange, I find it very worrying. Minor website, doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things (not to me anyway) but nobody has the right to come in to my home (I live on campus) and decide what I can and cannot read.

Right, I very rarely post on boards, but the outrage I am feeling right now has compelled to do so.
I am able to access www.usi.ie from outside dcu but not from within, I tried pcs in the labs in the Henry grattan and also wireless.

I hope to god there has been a technical fault, however, how one cannot access usi.ie and can access porn websites in dcu is puzzling to say the least.

Fair enough, there has been quite an amount of coverage of USI, and the possibility of reaffilating with the organisation in the college newspaper.

If somebody from the union or wherever has prohibited DCU students from accessing this site, then I hope to god students here have the balls to realise that that is not right and demand for resignations.

If what is being suggested is true, and censorship has been applied to the DCU web system, our intelligence and basic freedom of information rights have been taken away from us.

I will leave it there for now, until more is revealed. For the Unions sake, I hope some error has occurred, but the fact it is only the USI website raises some serious suspicions.

Watch this space, because for once, something major may have happened in DCU!

Won't somebody think of the children?

It's a misconfiguration. Ask CSD's technical support people about it.

Indeed, of the three proxy servers that DCU run (proxy1.dcu.ie etc...) two are refusing connections and one isn't. Looks like a mess up on DCU's end and hardly tin-foil hat material. Best solution is, as I said above, a quick mail to CSD to sort the problem out. :)

Lads, how exactly does an error like this happen to just one website?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 441 ✭✭KenHy

It hasn't I've had this error messege pop up for other websites in the past few days.

Apparently it was down to hosting365 (who host usi.ie among other websites) blacklisting DCU due to password infringements - seems to be sorted now

    Knickers, untwisted.

Can we have it blocked again?

Pretty sure that's bull****. There are DCU society websites hosted on 365 and there was no problem with them before. It was censored, plain & simple by the looks of it.

    *sigh*

Ever heard of Occam's razor mehfesto2?

Okay so one or two things happened...

    1. The SU decided that, for one reason or another, they no longer wanted students to access the USI website so they contacted CSD and asked them to block the site. They did this knowing that, if found out, there would be holy hell raised by some students and that it would be easy to trace back to them. Regardless, CSD agreed and a) blocked it using underhanded means in order for it to appear to be a misconfiguration on their side and b) ignored their own policy of not banning particular websites due to it being a form of censorship.

    OR

    2. There was a misconfiguration on either DCU's side (as hinted at by the proxy issue) or Hosting365s which also manifested itself through a lack of access of other sites as pointed out by another member. An issue which has since been fixed and access to all websites restored.

Now, which do you think is more likely?

    hmmm...

This is all pretty trivial, there was a problem, there's not now.. if dcu or the su for that matter had blocked it they'd have a reason and it would still be blocked. A bit of bickering wouldnt change it. It was most likely a configuration error in either the university or usi's hosting solution.

Even if it had been blocked, nothing of value would have been lost.

How can you trust what you view on the internet after this? If the SU can block one site, why they may even replace it! Next thing we know DCU is the next North Korea!

Pretty awful censorship, considering I'm in the library and on that site right now. Take it as a given that phaxx, gizmo and Winters know more about DCU's network than you do.

This sounds like another case of Peoplewhodon'thaveacluehowtheInternetorcomputersworkbuttheystillinsistonusingthemforfacebookbecausetheyaretardsitis.

And on that note I think the thread has run it's course. :)
