I know it's normal for engines to run rich when cold. But should I be getting a strong smell of petrol when the car is first started up. ( I only notice it when the window is down). After 3 - 5 mins of running the smell is gone.

Is it modified? engine wise, not exhaust wise.

I get the same in my 2002 Honda Civic 1.4 every cold morning, i'd say it is normal, goes once the car warms up

The whole car is totally standard

How old are the spark plugs? change them if there old. I read up on this some time ago and a few sites saying spark plugs could be an issue and causing 'fuel fouling' when cold - unburned raw fuel exiting the exhaust system.

I changed plugs 2 months ago so they should be ok. Going by other posts the smell seems to be fairly normal.

It's normal alright as the car gets an extra injection of juice when cold to get it going. But if it's excessive like you describe, then from what I've read it can be old or bad spark plugs. :)
