does anybody hav the correct answer to this question as everybody i seem to ask has a different answer!!!!
i was stopped by the guards the other day (for absolutely no f**kin reason) and i was told that the 7" bore exhaust on the car was against the law and that i could be done for noise pollution i now hav a few days to get a standard exhaust fitted and present it at the station. but of course i dont want to do that as not only will it cost money but it will ruin the look of my car. Am i not right in thinking that if my car passed the nct wit the current exhaust it should be legal??

The NCT is only introducing noise regulations at the moment, so you car wouldn't have been tested for noise.

Can I ask what car it's fitted to? If you've just fitted the exhaust and induction kit without doing any ignition/fuelling mods, you'll probably gain power by putting a standard exhaust back on.

indeed id say the sensors in the exhaust are knackered but its so loud you cant hear/feel the difference

Currently as it stands if a Garda stops you and says its illegal then yes its illegal and you have to comply or face court.

The EU directive on measuring noise hasn't been passed yet so its still simply the opinion of a Garda that means you can get done for a loud exhaust.

A 7inch big bore exhaust on a Levin would look ridiculous anyway so taking it off would enhance the appearance of the car

You said it would ruin the look of the car, hence bringing it into the topic

Unless it came on the car from the factory and is below 85db then no.

The old law you were done under is

    http://193.178.1.79/ZZSI190Y1963.html

    1. These Regulations may be cited as the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) Regulations, 1963.
    29. (1)
Every vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine shall, subject to the provisions of sub-article (2) of this article, be fitted with an exhaust silencer or other device suitable and sufficient for reducing to a reasonable level the noise caused by the escape of exhaust gases from the engine.
    (2) Sub-article (1) of this article shall not apply to a vehicle taking part in a trial, competition or race carried out on a road closed under section 35 of the Local Government Act, 1955 (No. 9 of 1955), subject to any conditions the local authority concerned may impose in connection with such closing.
    34 (e)
every silencer or similar contrivance which is required to be fitted under these Regulations shall be maintained in good and efficient working order and shall not have been altered in such a way that the noise caused by the escape of the exhaust gases is made greater by the alteration

Fit a quiet exhaust or face a fine. You were pulled because you were making a load of noise(if you need a reason).

7" is excessive to say the least.

+1, I had a 4.5inch bore on the evo and the bloody thing would wreck your head, you can just imagine the levin bbbbaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, (gear change) baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

If you don't go around roaring through a town they'll leave ya alone too!! :P

The worst thing about having an exhaust that big on a small engine, is that it'll announce to the world how little power you've got. Everyone'll be forced to listen to how long it takes to struggle to the redline before you gear change. Do you really want everyone to know that?

Modifying cars properly is not just sticking a big exhaust and big alloys on a car.

I think the silly looking 7'' exhaust has taken care of that part..these stupid sized exhausts and alloys on cheap granny shopper cars really do look like such a joke, either you can afford a performance car or you cant..

My god if we couldn't just beat that into them!!
I hate the sight of the civics going around everywhere bawling until five in the morning!! And the boys in the glanza's, they go around thinking because they have a turbocharged yolk they're different! I used to see them coming up behind me or anyone else and go to pass, and you'd just touch the throttle and they'd be back 4 mile behind ya!!
Those boys give the rest of us a bad name!!
