Was anyone at this last night?? I hoped to go to it but was away with work, badly needed in the area, no triathlon club as far as I know in either westport or Castlebar. Might break up my commute from Galway to Mayo

Following a successful gathering on Tuesday last, it was decided that an Open water swimming club and Triathlon club were necessary in the Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, area. To give everyone a chance it was decided to hold another meeting to set up the clubs on Tuesday, December 8th, at 8pm, in Gannon’s Bar, Ballinrobe Anyone interested in being involved in open water swimming or Triathlon should turn up and get involved. This will be the first time a club of this nature is set up in the North Galway South Mayo area.

I was unable to attend but a few friends were at it. A lot of the crew I swim with here attended and do a lot of triathlons and some OW events. Padraig Marrey is the driving force behind it and I believe it is going to be called the Three Lakes Triathlon Club. Looks like there is a lot of interest too which is very good. Some lovely spots up around that area for a triathlon.

Thanks PGibbo. That Tuam masters swimming sessions is interesting, near enough to me. 20:00 on a sunday night though, tis well you don't drink.

Maybe I am wrong but Ballinrobe doesnt have a pool does it, swimming sessions in Tuam would be a real bonus for me (and my good wife too)!

Good idea for Padraig to try for something up around there, would be beneficial to his business as well to have a tri club in the area. There are a few guys in my gym always talking about joining one so I will mention the name

The Tuam Masters might be moving to 19:00 on Sunday nights in the new year. We should know in the next week or so. We currently have people from Claremorris, Ballinrobe, Cong, Shrule, etc swimming with us on Sunday nights. Padraig swims with us from time to time also. Haven't seen him in the pool in around 9 months though.

Feel free to pop along any time. New members are always welcome.

Padraig would probably be the best person to conact ZuppyLurk. I can get contact details for him and PM them to you if you like.

Update - I just spoke with one of the lads that has been at all the meetings. Averaging about 20 people at the meetings. Committee was formed last night. I know the chairman, treasurer and secretary plus some of the other committee members. I can get more details. 16 registered members so far. Next steps are to register with TI. PM me for more details or contact info.

Stay up in ye own County there Gibbo, don't want yer type down here scaring our sheep ;)

What level are them 16 members that you know of P? If P Marrey is involved it should be a decent setup.

I see he has setup a decathlon in Castlebar in March.

Don't worry, there's no fear of me venturing over the border unless I absolutely have to! :P

I don't know all the 16 but there are all levels in the ones I do know - people that did their first sprint distance this year to people that are hoping to do their first triathlon next year. Some if the group have done plenty of Sprint & Olympic distance events. 4 or 5 have done HIM. There's a good distribution in age too - from people in their 20's to people in their 60's. I also know that at least 2 of the club members are attempting their first IM next year too. Overall I think there's a good mix of people and also some very knowlegable people. No egos either which is also a serious plus! :D I reckon that by the end of January their will be at least another 15 to 20 members if not more.

Have you a link to the Castlebar event? You sure it's not a duathlon?

Delighted to see a club in this part of the country , did first Tri last year and wanted to join a club ,as I live in Westport ,Ballinrobe is ideal venue . Will join at next meeting . Any plans for pool swims , Westport has a great set up here . ?
With open swimming will the training be curtailed to warm water weather ?
Any training/cycles planned between now and Jan ?

Where wud the best place to get a few one to one lessons in Westport? I do the circuits in the leisure centre, so I wonder if they would give me one to one lessons so that I can improve and learn the correct breathing.

Theres a girl who trains swimmers in Castlebar, Loraine is her name, dont know where she is based but Kingfisher in Castlebar will have her number if you ask. She seems to be very popular, always seems to be busy in there

I am making a guess at most of these and I'm sure the detail will come from the club in the coming weeks:

A lot of the people at the meeting currently swim in Tuam. I'd be surprised if there aren't some sessions planned in a pool like Westport or Castlebar for members who are too far from Tuam.
OW swims usually start in May. Some people start in April.
Not sure the answer on training or cycles. You have a few options though until the club training times are established - ring Padraig or one of the committee members or cycle with Western Lakes. A lot of the members also train in Caherlistrane / Headford area and a lot of the cycles, runs and gym sessions in that area are done from Andrew's gym in Caherlistrane.

    Hope that helps.

Just a point. There's a good lane swim on Wednesday nights in Castlebar pool from 7.45 to 8.30. There was about 10 people in the pool Wednesday gone - one other and myself in the lane i was in.

I haven't heard anything since before Christmas. With the weather and the Christmas socialising I haven't been talking to any of the lads. Tuam Masters are starting their latest swim sessions this Sunday night. I will be talking to a few of the lads then. If you like you can PM me and I can provide you with the phone number for the 3 Lakes Tri Club secretary.

Did you enter the Ballinrobe Triathlon Club.
    Is it any good?
Are there any fees to pay to be in the club?

    Thank you

Club is just being formed at the moment and I understand there are around 30 members so far. I believe the membership is 25euro but am not sure. From those I know that joined there's a very good mix of members in both age (mid 20s up to 60+) and abilities (new to tri to IM).

Yes Padraic is finalising the club at the monent. Which is great news, there so many athletes around that it deserve to have one.

There is also a new club in Wesport been created at the monent, I have been asked to look after teh coaching of it and help to do the setup. It will have a juniro section linked to the westport swimming club which is growing at the moment : www.westportswimclub.com

    +1

I was talking to the club secretary during the week and the club is registered with TI. Club gear is being designed and the website will hopefully be up and running in the next couple of weeks.

Good to hear, great spot for it, alot of clubs around here now, was going to go the same route last year but as it was my first season in Tri I felt I didn't know enought about it .
I registered a website last year "triwestport.com" , if the guys are interested I can reassign FOC . No use to me.
