Overactive Hamstrings

    Hey guys

Just wondering if any of you can give me some advice? I ran the DCM this year. It was my first marathon. Did it in 3:44 so I was delighted with myself.I felt great afterwards although a little stiff for about 2 days following it. I started back running a week later just doing 2 miles or so, nothing major.

However I started to feel tightness in my inner thigh which progressed to pain when i ran. So I stopped running and went to the physio.

She said Ive overactive hamstrings and weak gluts. She gave me some exercises which include bridging, stretching my quads and ITB. She advised me to stop running for a few weeks but I could continue with cycling, swimming and yoga. However I ended up playing a tag rugby match which totally fecked the injury up and so had to take anti inflammatories for the pain which set me back a bit.

Its now 4 wks later and although the injury is 10 times better, I still cant run! When I try to run, I can feel a tightness in my inner thigh which if I continue to run will begin to hurt . Im still going to the physio and getting massages and doing bikram yoga which really help but I just wondered has anyone else had a similar injury and if so , what did they do to heal it? How long did it take to heal? Just dying to go running and am feeling very frustrated that I cant:mad: Also getting a bit stressed that Ill never run again!!

Didn't have similar injury but had(and still have the problem) of weak glutes and over active hamerstrings. When I went to physio bout it he couldn't believe that I never tore my hammers.

First thing when you are doing the bridges ensure you are activating your glutes and NOT your hamstrings. I could not do the bridge for 4 weeks as glutes were so weak, I was activating hammers.

Had to lie on floor on my front and just squeeze in order to build them up and slowly progressed from there. Once you have built the gluete up it needs to be reedcuated as to when to kick in.

Advise small steps, be patient, do the exercises regularly every day, ensure you stretch out your hip flexors as well as the hammers and DON't play tag rugby.

When you say you got a massage, was it bloody painful deep tissue or just someone giving you a nice rub?

Glutes are key, and are frequently under utilised by AG athlete's. Crowie worked extremely hard on Glute strength prior to winning Ironman Hawaii 08/09=. Everyone should be at it!!!

Also had weak glutes (bursiitis in left hip, and a range of lower back injuries and hamstring tightness resulted). Work hard on the activation! And keep it up all the time, it'll improve your efficiency.
