Heading to Tokyo in April 10. Does anyone have any reccomendations on budget accomodation over there?

Also, where's the best area to stay if you're a tourist?

Look for a 'ryōkan' (Japanese inn, often run by a family). Pretty much anywhere reasonably central is fine for a tourist - there'll no doubt be a subway station nearby to get you where you need to go quickly and easily.

If possible, I'd recommend Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku or Ikebukuro (all fairly central, but big enough in themselves that you don't need to travel for food etc).

How long are you going for and what's your itinerary? Lots of budget accommodation in Tokyo but it's a big place and depending what you're up to some will be a lot better than others.

Stayed in the Khaosan a number of times. It's a 10 minute walk from the subway line (Ginza sen), it's cheap, clean, and has a good atmosphere.

Thank ye all kindly. It's all very much appreciated.

    The Khaosan places look great.

We're going to Japan for 11 nights. We're hoping to stay in Tokyo for around 5 before heading on for Kyoto, Hiroshima and miyajima Island. Somewhere near a metro or train station would be ideal as we're hoping to make day trips to Nikko and kamkura.
It's all all part of a 6 week trip that's going to also going to include New Zealand, Thailand and Sydney so money's gonna be be stretched very tight
