Hey, was thinking of starting on the pill but need to figure a few things out first.
Around how much does it cost? My health care don't cover any contraception :(
Is there a minimum age for getting the pill?
Which type do you think is best/works best for you?
How long before it takes effect?
Is it only available on prescription?
    Thanks

there is a thread on this topic. Which one is the best, you should discuss with GP as some can make people moody and others work best for different people.

It is prescription only, you will have to see a dr to see if you are able to take it.

Drs fees are around 50 euros for the visit the prescription costs can be anything from 13 to 22 euros a month depending on what the dr prescribes for you. Drs will often issue a 3 month prescription at first.

There are two types of pill the progesteron only pill, also know as the mini pill
    and a combination pill.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progestogen_only_pill
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combined_oral_contraceptive_pill

Drs will prescribe the oral contraceptive pill if there is a need from age 16 on wards.

The different brands of the pill have different levels of active ingredients so what is right for one person and works well with them, may very have unlivilbe side effects for someone else and finding the right one can be a case of trial and error.

The instructions for starting a certain type of pill will be in the box when you get it from the chemist, usually you have to take it for 7 days before it becomes effective, but if you forget to take one or if you go on anti boitics or if you throw up or get diarrhea it can stop working.

While the oral contraception pill may prevent pregnancy it will not stop a woman from catching an STI or HIV and condoms should be used until a couple can get an sti screening.

I would suggest that you check here and read the fact sheets.

    1. Approx €50 every six months for doctor and approx €12 a month for pill (well the one I'm on anyway!)
    2. No there is no minimum age - girls can be on it from a pretty young age for skin/period reasons etc.
    3. I have only ever been on Yasmin and I have never had an issue with it. Each doctor will probably have their own preferences and it will depend on why you are going on it - most important is that you go for to the doc for your prescription they check you bloodpressure you's discuss side effects (if any) and if things are not correct your doc should try you on a different pill.
    4. You take your first pill once you finish a period and then yes it takes affect pretty much immediately.
    5. Yes only on prescription!

Im on "ovranette" and its only €4.50 a month.....
€50 for the visit to the doctor....when I went first he only gave me a 1 month prescription to see how it went, when I went back and he gave me a 6 month one he didn't charge as it was a follow-up visit, although you might be entitled to a medical card in which case all the above is paid for, if not you may be entitled to a GP visit card. I'm a student living at home and I'm not working, I applied for the GP visit card and got one, my parent's incomes weren't taken into account either. So now my GP visits are free although I still have to pay for any prescriptions etc.
