Processor question

Better, particularly vis-a-vis non-gaming. i* is a new and superior topology over the outgoing i2 (Core2) technology. Also, i7s and up have HyperThreading, giving increases of up to 100% in massively-multithreaded applications (as they are effectively running on 8 virtual cores instead of 4 physical ones). Downside is high power consumption and HT can cause issues and slowdown with linearised apps - typically networking and gaming.

Both those CPUs aren't worth it - they're very overpriced. The i7-920 (LGA1366) and i7-860 (LGA1156) are far better bets. The cheaper i5-750 (LGA1156) is also very good, especially if you're not running anything that really needs HT.

Is the i7 architecture that much better?

i7 is much better than the Q9650.i7 has multithreading and socket 1366 is more future proofed than 775
