Advertising (or lack of) for the European XC this weekend

Is it just me or has anybody else noticed a serious lack of advertising for the European XC this weekend ? The only add I've seen is one in a couple of national papers and even then it was lost in the back pages !

I've seen or heard nothing on the TV or radio either. I know money is tight but surely RTE or one of the large radio stations in Dublin could have been brought on board.

Has anybody seen any advertisments for this event ?

Only here really, but I did see a couple of posters up in Spar shops as well I think.

That's cool, I was worried there was nothing like this at all. Having said that most people I know including some regular runners don't know it's on this weekend :(

Great, they should let the schools in Lucan know this, the kids will flock in their 10s and 20s :D

There's an interview on rte.ie with Catriona McKiernan and Ian O'Riordan about the Euros. Not too sure what radio show it was initially on. Anyway, they briefly mention the lack of advertising about it in National papers etc which O'Riordan glosses over. That'd be the same Ian O'Riordan who used his weekly athletics column in the Times, 8 days before the European XC comes to Dublin, to talk about the running streak of Ron Hill and random eejits in Ireland!

Spotted lots of small signs in the city but a bit to small for me.

Slightly off topic but does anyone know what the broadcast coverage is for this. Says on the website that it will be watched by XX million people on TV worldwide.

I ask because Im in Boston and REALLY want to see this. RTE's online coverage is restricted to Ireland only so that's out. Doubt it would make it to Justin.tv either? Hoping for some online coverage of the BBC broadcast.

I can just imagine how little there is to be spent on Promotion given the huge shortfall for the event as it is, unless the promotion budget is part of the shortfall.

Do they have a radio partner?

Ok the euro's are on in santry on sun but what advertising has been done for it.The only bit i've seen is in the irish runner and at the national c/ship.
But what advertising has been done to get the ordinary person to go.I have seen nothing in any of major newspapers the last few days to get people interested in going.
Also,i think it will be shown live on rte but that has not been well advertised. Its probably up to rte to advertise it but the AAI could have put an advert on tv asking people to come to santry to support the irish team, especially when we have a great chance of winning medals.
If it was the soccer team even going to a tournament we'd be sick of reading about it in the papers and ads on tv

Its not every year we get the best athlete's in europe to compete on our doorstep

I merged the two threads as they were on the same topic.

As has been said above, I would imagine there is a miniscule budget for promotion available, and some of the posters have seen ads in the nationals and on billboards, etc.

The problem is that these media are still very expensive to advertise in, so I'm guessing they've had to allocate their budget as best they can. Yes, it's unfortunate there isn't a greater buzz to attract the more casual fan, but the money simply isn't there. As for RTÉ, I would hope to see a spate of ads over the next few days, but I wouldn't count on it.

You can't even buy tickets on 'the place where they sell the tickets, which cannot be named'. Either the site is having problems, or they've stopped selling them.
We're sorry, we're unable to process your request. Please try again.

Anyone know if you can pay on the day?

Not sure if you can pay on the day, would be daft if they don't have that option though for people just turning up.

Otherwise, the ticket I have is for 2 adults and 4 kids, so you can be my wife if you want?

As a club member, if you ring the office (0)1 8869933..they'll send out the ticket to you at the €10 rate.

If the money isn't there Dublin shouldn't have been awarded the competition in the first place.

I'm delighted the races are in Dublin, it's great for us who live in Ireland and for our athletes, but if the AAI can't afford to host an event they shouldn't be in the position they are now. This could make a complete shambles of the competition and take the enjoyment away for everybody.

It has resulted in spectators paying admission, which hasn't happened in other European cities, and who knows what else may fall short on the day. Hopefully it wont be as poorly organised as Coleraine on Sunday!

I'd be too concerned about what you might expect in return, but that's probably a discussion for a different forum.

The competition was awarded in 2007; a completely different environment. I think it's pretty obvious that the AAI woukdn't have put them up for contention if they knew the funding wasn't going to be there.

They dont seem to be great at advertising it but i would be refrain from labelling dedicated athletes as random eejits.....

Also there is no excuse for not advertising it better.... Its a once off and the money should be found somewhere to promote our sport.... These events are rarely held in Ireland.....

What money?!! There is no money to be found anywhere. They're barely covering the cost of the event itself (I'm not sure they even are with the ticket prices). I can only presume that they've excercised all the avenues for Govt funding through the Dept. of Arts, Sport and Tourism, and Fáilte Ireland are already involved. I severely doubt there is any more avenues for promotion funding available.

I haven't heard of anything like this happening, but an event in the city centre this week might catch the eye of the masses, something along the lines of what Bydgoscz did for the WJC and next year's WXC, and what Barcelona are doing for the Euros. But they all cost money too, which just isn't there.

I appreciate these are straitened times but AAI have known of this event for 2 years now and surely some contingency fund could have been forecasted down the line....Its not every year we have this privilege and from reading between the lines money is being wasted enriching an already wealthy legal profession.....

Just spam the xfactor* forums with the story about Jedward being there and the place will be packed, no further advertising needed.

X factor fans are so fickle they've probably forgotten jedward already!

Fair enough. I understand everyone's frustrations, as these opportunities to showcase the sport in Ireland only come around every now and again.

They just covered the setup for Sunday on the one o'clock news. Claimed that they were expecting 10,000 to turn up to it.

I can't see 10,000 being there, half that I'd say at most based on the normal spectating numbers you get at athletic meets here.

They missed a chance to mention Jedward as well in that report. :D
