I like SuperQuinn, but don't shop there that often because they are a bit pricey. I do shop there now and again.

That aside this is not much of a Bargain, if I'm reading this right you have to spend €150 euro between 9-24Dec and another €300 Jan 1-31 to avail of the full €50 off.

    Here is a better BA...
If you need to buy the equivalent of €450 of shopping from Superquinn,
buy it somewhere else, you will save more than €50 and don't have to buy certain amounts or between certain dates!

It really pisses me off that Supermarkets (retailers in general) in ROI are ripping us all off! Higher costs me arse... the reason is higher profits!

The 'paddy tax' is alive and well - recession or not.

It's a bargain for people who do their weekly shopping at Superquinn. An Irish company, whose money doesn't go to other countries.

I agree with alot of what you said but stop perpetuating ignorance, you can't just dismiss the higher costs of the South when looking at these things. If I see one more person using the "Paddy Tax is alive and well" line in ignorance I will have a little cry.

No one is forcing anyone to shop in SQ. I don't why people feel the need to either SQ bash or list every other shop thats cheaper here. Like all shops, they have their good points and bad. And this is not the place to list them.

If anyone does their weekly shopping there, then the OP is good to know.

Not everybody wants to shop in Dunnes/Tesco just because it is cheaper.
    I like to enjoy shopping.
On the occasions when I do go to Tesco, I feel like I'm surrounded by losers, the store is rough too, as rough as the people who go there. And there are always some langers hanging around outside, and if they aren't outside, they are inside, trying to figure out which bottle of cheap booze will get them drunk.

I don't want to drag this thread off topic, but this warrants a reply.

I appreciate that this I came across a bit cavalier, and that there are in some cases higher costs in ROI (rent, taxes, wages, energy etc). However it is a fact that many shops charge an additional (over and above the real extra costs) premium in Irish branches (aka the Paddy Tax). This is a fact straight from people I know that are staff in multinational retailers.

    Dismissing this fact is ignorance.

Does it cost the retailer €200 extra to sell a coat in Dublin than in various other cities in Europe? Does it cost €25 euro extra to sell a pair of shoes in Dublin than in Belfast? No, the shop put the price up based on what they think people will pay. This is fair enough, it capitalism but it pisses me off no end to then hear the retailers association whinging that people aren't buying off them and asking for government handouts to 'protect jobs'. They want to protect profits! If they reduced their prices to a reasonable level more people will buy and stop running across the border every time they want a pint of milk.

And BTW I'm all for buying Irish, but there are better value Irish alternatives, and this is a Bargain forum after all it's about pointing out where the value is, not the supermaket with the best ambiance! As said in my first post I do sometimes shop in Superquinn, I like the shop and particularly their baked goods and fresh produce, but this isn't really a Bargain Alert. If you have to do your weekly shopping in Superquinn every week for whatever reason, they I'm sure you'll see the signs in store, but are people really going to go running to SQ for this 'great saving' ... well maybe - they say there is one born every minute :)

    I didn't dismis anything sir.

I am fully aware that when rents, higher Vat/minimum wages, economies of scale etc are taken into account there is still a disparity.

What I don't do however, is try and attribute every cent of difference between a Northern and Southern good to a "rip-off".

The rest of your post goes into some rant explaining that you are not anti-Irish in terms of your shopping habits - nothing that really applies to anything I said tbh.

EDIT: Tbh I can sum up by saying if you had included the clarification above in your OP that I wouldn't have opened mu mouth about it.

I never mentioned the North / South in the original post, the reference to Belfast in my reply was in passing - applies equally to many European cities, perhaps more so to those in the euro.

The second half my my reply wasn't really directed at you, but at other replies to my original post.

So as long as it isn't in ignorance I can continue to say the Paddy Tax is alive an well without you contributing to the floods then? ;)

Having worked there for years I can say the one of the reasons their prices are higher is wages. I was on 13euro per hour and worked the night shift for a year at double time 26euro per hour. All I did was pack shelves.
The staff were well looked after, not sure how it is now left four years ago.

Too many mistakes were made letting staff go and opening a central warehouse.

If they do leave I would miss them. Love the bakery and sausages.:D

If they leave I suppose you will just have to go to the Tesco on Ganymede :).

There are such a wide variety of bargains across all retailers to be had in the current climate you cannot say any one particular retailer is cheaper than another - what is on offer one week in Dunnes,Supequinn, Tesco's etc. could be on offer in a different period elsewhere. If you "shop around" on a particular day / couple of days you will have differentials but with the vast offers on at present it is hard to justify a sweeping statement as above - price index is due out shortly and we will await the results of same to prove above statement - I note Superquinn are also doing another promo for Xmas - 10% off your Xmas turkey http://bit.ly/6JPUZL- I never have anything but Superquinn Turkey each Xmas and it is Yum

Sorry folks bit link not working - go to superquinn website for further details

Spot on. Unless SQ is doing very cheap booze though, I would find it hard to spend 150 in SQ on things that are on offer on a particular day. Or any supermarket. Unless as I said there was a very good deal on booze.

BTW, remove the '-' at the end of your link and it works.
