What's with nearly every song using a vocoder?

This is for the very commerical hip-hop stuff, e.g. Kanye, Timbaland, etc.

I'm sitting at home today with my TV showing the Kiss music channel. Nearly every song is using a vocoder when the artist sings. They aren't trying to hide it as it seems a feature of each song.

    Seems rather repetitive...

unfortunatley it's just one of those fads that is after taking off in the charts/mainstream. In some places it is used well, in others it's a downright disgrace.

Yes, it depends on how it's applied. As I see it T-Pain seems to be the only one who gets it consistently right.

Worst example I've heard so far was Kano's new tune. Defies description.
