do you have to jailbreak to unlock?

    hi,

    i have an o2 iphone and im wondering can i unlock it without jailbreaking? and if so whats the best way to do it?

    no.

    you need to jailbreak to unlock, you can't have one without the other.


    unless...(and it's a big unless)

    if you can convince your cellular provider to send an unlock request to apple, in which case the next time you sync your iphone to itunes you'll have an unlocked iphone. good luck with this option though...

    ok thanks for the reponse, the unlocking thread is so big, what is the best software to do it? i have an o2 3g handset, never been used, how can i tell what firmware it has?

    Settings >> general >> about.

    That will get you the firmware.

    As to which software you use is toatally up to…

    1. What firmware you have. As far as I know blackra1n is the only software that jailbreaks and unlocks 3.1.2 phones.

    2. What os you have. Blackra1n has win/mac applications where as pwnagetool is mac only. I prefer pwnagetool as your a bit more involved in the process whereas blackra1n is basically one click jailbreak. Also note only a theathered jailbreak exists on 3.1.2 which means if you turn your phone off you have to repeat the whole process again.
