Hi all, hoping someone can help?
Recently bought an Alba 10MP Webcam from Argos but it won't work on my ibook G4 10.3.9. from what i can gather i need to get the mac driver for this to work (as the CD that comes with it won't run or install on my mac laptop/ibook) So would anyone know of any driver link to suit this webcam or Alba site (can't find maybe has a parent company?) as in the specifications of the webcam it states Mac compatible (I double checked its compatiblity as this is my 3rd webcam in 2 weeks) any help appreciated. Also hope i'm in the right section apologies if not

Unfortunately, a ton of webcams don't work at all in OS X - there is however an open source project called, MacCam, that supports quite a few USB webcams. I have it working quite well with an old crappy Creative webcam I have lying around but not sure if this will work in your case as well - more info here:

I purchased one of the most popular selling webcams on the market made by Microsoft and had a similar issue.

MacCam is also the only solution I found but didn't bother with it as the quality wasn't great using it and the audio didnt work. Eventually gave it to the wife for her PC and bought a secondhand iSight on eBay.

Hi thanks very much for both your advice - I had macam but for some reason this is not installing the only thing i can think of is that my ibook may be a bit old!! 10.3.9 so is there a special version of macam/sourceforge that i would need to download. It's amazing my first webcam was a very cheap and cheerful one again from argos and worked no problem? Thanks again if you have any comments on above Qs let me know cheers

Panther is way before my time so I'm afraid I don't really know if any version of MacCam works with it - 0.8 is listed as specifically not working - but I'd try some of the older editions out, if you haven't already.

Unfortunately, as Philiporeilly mentioned as well, even some of the most popular webcams don't work on OS X. I just got this today for a Mac Mini so we'll see how it goes:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001ASHOSC/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

But unless you get one specifically listed as working for OS X or an iSight, MacCam is really your only option I believe.

If you were using a newer Intel Mac, Windows virtualization might have provided a workaround, but that's also not an alternative on an iBook unfortunately...

At work at moment so can't try out "older version" of Macam but will later - I have new imac and built in webcam works great but just with the ibook + webcam it's so handy, kitchen, sitting room etc... not restricted to desk in upstairs front room/office:( anywho will give macam a go, thanks for your help and advice much appreciated
