E4 HD Is On The Way

Launching supposedly some time before Christmas, E4 HD looks like it will be part of Sky's HD pack but may very well be FTV, this has not yet been confirmed. It will be available on Sky channel 215 sometime soon, but no official date has launched, although reading the FAQ page on E4's website, it has apparently launched already...

No word yet on whether this will be available in the ROI as well, but seing as E4 is I'm pretty sure it will make an appearance sooner rather than later.

I'm sure it will come here.

with 60 out of the 65 programs blocked

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,620 ✭✭✭Rick_

Well, how much of E4's current schedule is blocked in the ROI? I don't see why the schedule won't be the same in HD as it is for SD.

If you want unrestricted E4 you can just tune it in by other channels, although a Sky box won't let you tune in E4 HD as I'm sure it's using the symbol rate of 29500.

I would have to disagree with that. How much of the E4 schedule gets blocked now?

It wouldn't surprise me to see this not show up on the Irish EPG. What reason could there be for not having Channel 4 HD?

Probably will be FTV like C4 HD so won't be available here.

Anyone know where to order a FTV card for use over here.

Seconded. I'd love to be able to get CH4 HD!

I really hope we get on the Sky HD package. Ive a sneaky suspicion it will be launched on the 17th of December, to coincide with the season 4 of How I Met Your Mother? Could be a reason they delayed to show season 4 right after season 3.

Im not sure how much HD content they could get out of their current line up of shows on E4. Skins, Scrubs, HIMYM, My Name is Earl, the odd movie. Maybe show some C4HD content too like True Blood, Desperate Housewives etc.

Edit: Just read this on the E4 website:
E4 HD is a direct simulcast of the core E4 schedule. A proportion of the programmes will have been originally made in the HD format, these will include some of our well know US series and films as well as some Channel 4 commissioned programmes. The Channel 4 Group is committed to increasing its investment in HD production and acquiring programmes in the HD format. We fully intend to increase the proportion of our schedule which is made in high definition over time. The remaining non-HD programmes will be up-converted from the SD source material.

With Glee and The Cleveland Show to air on E4 in the coming months, I might just have to subscribe to Sky HD, that is of course we get the channel. All I want now is Comedy Central HD.

Can that be tuned into a Freesat box (the Humax Foxsat)?

From the FAQ section on their web site...

The E4 HD service will be available on channel 215 via Sky HD only, so you will need to have a Sky HD box and viewing card, as well as an HD ready TV to view.

Just tried rebooting the box with the viewing card out, to get the "English" EPG (sort of!). Anyway, E4 HD isn't on it, but interestingly there's a blank line where Ch 215 should be; not a jump from the channel immediately before it to the channel immediately after it but an actual blank line!

Has a launch date been announced. Their website is wrong.

Tried tuning it in on a freesat box.
    it is encrypted

There is a gap between 214 and 250 because Sky naturally have a one line gap between channels on the guide of different genres. This isn't a gap for E4 HD. There's a gap after the last Lifestyle & Culture channel in the 280's before Sky Premiere on 301 for example. :)

The off epg test is currently encrypted in the SKYHD pack. It can be opened with a uk card. I do not have an Irish SKY sub so cannot see if Irish card will open channel. A uk ftv card currently will not open channel.

Using my non Sky box last night I was able to tune it in and watch programming using my Irish Sky (Sky HD) card!

It does not work with my UK FTV card.

It launches on December 14th and will be available to Irish viewers.

Bit crap that you have to have the HD pack to watch it though

I'd imagine that we would not be seeing E4 HD without Channel 4 first getting some money to pay for any costs.

You know, I reckon that it's another ploy by Sky themselves so that it is ONLY available to those with the HD pack to make their HD pack more appealing!

Presume C4 are getting a slice of subscription revenue from Sky too which suits both sides, another channel for Sky to drive traffic of their HD package.

No, C4 HD does not require the HD pack sub, ANY UK card including the FTV ones will allow you to watch it.

Any chance of them enabling C4 HD for Irish viewers on the same date I wonder?

I must have misinterpreted what you said, either way I severely doubt C4 gets any cut of revenue from Sky.

If we are lucky, E4HD might repeat C4HD content, like True Blood etc.

    From Digital Spy.....

Channel 4 has confirmed plans to launch a high definition simulcast of E4 on Sky next week.

As the broadcaster's second high definition channel, E4 HD will become available on the satellite platform from December 14.

Situated at position 215 on Sky's EPG, the channel will carry upscaled versions of programmes such as Peep Show, Misfits and Hollyoaks.

Under a multi-year deal agreed with Sky, E4 HD will be incorporated into the Sky HD pack to bring the total number of available channels to 36. It also follows the recent launch of Channel 4 HD on both Sky and Virgin Media.

"The growing appetite for HD across the UK and Ireland is clear to see. We were quick to respond to this demand in launching Channel 4 HD, and with the launch of E4 HD we look forward to delivering our viewers even more of the shows they love in stunning high definition," said Channel 4 head of channel development Sarah Rose.

Sky director of product management Hilary Perchard added: "We're delighted to welcome E4 HD and another quality HD schedule to Sky. We've never seen higher demand for Sky+ HD and this is a response to delivering customers a high-quality and wide-ranging selection of subscription HD programming.

"Incorporating an increasingly diverse mix of the channels and programmes our customers love, Sky continues to extend its HD leadership."

Channel 4 HD is expected to launch on the new Freeview HD service next year. However, it's unclear whether E4 HD will also be made available on the DTT platform or on the Freesat HD service.

If E4 HD is to be encrypted then they have to receive some revenue from Sky. E4 HD wont be added for free.

I can't see why C4 would do this without getting some revenue frim Sky TBH.

What I can't understand following this news is why Ch4 HD isn't carried by Sky.

Luckily some of us have UK FTV cards though :D

C4HD is FTV, so that probably has something to do with it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

I don't see how it can. Channel 4 was FTV in the UK when it joined the Irish EPG.

True. But buying the rights for TV Shows for both UK and Eire would be more expensive rather than buying them just for the UK so they are keeping C4HD UK exclusive. Like stated before in the thread, C4 may be getting some revenue from Sky for E4HD so they can put it on both the UK and Irish EPG. The fact that E4HD will be subscription based (unlike C4HD which is FTV in all of the UK) will also make TV rights cheaper.

Well; I've gort one of the old blue Sky UK cards , with C4 HD at number 140 on the EPG. When I try to watch it, I get the onscreen message "Call **** to upgrade your subscription to receive this HD channel". So, not completely free then. Whereabouts would a person be likely to get hold on one of those FTV cards then?

Edit; that old UK Sky card is now picking up Ch4 HD. Must be something to do with the fact that I hadn't used that old card in months (almost since Five went FTA, and you could tune it into "other channels").

E4 was always intended for Ireland since it launched so Channel 4 have been buying the rights for this country also.

Currently viewing E4 HD on the new White Sky card so it looks like it will be fully available for ROI.

    11856 V
    29500
    3/4

    Appears as '3876'

Also just after a scan there's some other HD channel appearing as '3807'. I can't figure out what channel is showing. Currently on is some old movie 'Charlie Chan and the curse of the dragon queen) Any ideas? It's on

    12012 H
    29500
