    Supernatural had a superb year.

True Blood's second season was fantastic.

Nurse Jackie was the best new dramatic show of the year, and Modern Family is probably the funniest show of the last few years.

Being Human, Misfits and Survivors are probably the best of the new British series this year.

For an Irish nominee....I thought Pure Mule was entertaining.

For reality TV.... The Apprentice has been good also this year.

Still haven't watched 'Mad Men' but 'Breaking Bad' had a damn fine second season - better than the first probably.
It's Always Funny in Philadelphia did not fail to deliver again either
Don't know.. it was mostly a great season but I thought there was a few duds. God.. and that that terrible Christmas special!

Dexter has been terrific this year so far.
Fringe has come on in leaps and bounds.
Heroes is much improved this year.
Survivor 19 has been the best series of the show since the All Stars Season 8 in 2004.
My favourite has been Supernatural though - very few (if any?) bad episodes in Season 4 or 5 so far.

I have a backlog of Modern Family episodes on Sky+... must get around to watching them!

I hope SGU will be a 2010 contender although 'The Pacific' starts in March 2010:D

Actually I'd have to say Reaper and My Name Is Earl were both fantastic this year as well, despite being cancelled.

In terms of US TV , the standouts are Lost[continues to atonish] , the last episodes of Battlestar[save the god awful last 10/15 minutes of the finale] , Fringe[quite amazing how far it has come from its mediorce at best pilot] and Dollhouse[if only just for the second half of season 1, and the last 2 episodes of the current season].

UK TV, standouts include Peep Show[amazing as always] and The Thick of It[Peter Capaldi puting in the second best preformance of the year ,for any show].

However, overall, the best tv show of the year has to be Torchwood: Children of Earth. 5 fantastically plotted, and acted episodes, which proved thrilling, funny and terrifying at times[the cabinet meeting to dicuss how to give the 456 their demands comes to mind]. And Peter Capaldi was mesmorising, preformance of the year by a longshot, as far detached from his Malcom Tucker alter ego as you could go.

Fringe improves every ep loving it but far and away the best series this year is misfits. Have hope for flash forward stargate universe next year and maybe v

You're in for a treat, Basquille. Apart from one weakish episode, its been bloody brilliant. Top of my play list for tonight ...

Dexter really has been fantastic this season, compulsive viewing. Can't wait to get home tonight for the latest episode.

    The Thick Of It
    Peep Show
    Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle

I dont watch US stuff till it comes to DVD so no nods for their shows. :pac:

By far the best programme I have seen on TV this year was the Torchwood: Children of Earth 5 part series on BBC. It was everything that good TV should be with a great story, engaging characters, a scary nemesis and lot's of twists.

    Honourable mentions to:

    True Blood
    Modern Family
    The Apprentice (UK and Ireland)
    The Inbetweeners
    Merlin
    The US Office

I haven't seen enough to judge but Misfits on E4 looks good too.

As a massive fan of it for years I actually think it's had its poorest year. It's become far too childish and Harry features in way too many of the skits.

For comedy, I enjoyed immensely Curb Your Enthusiasm . I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it as it's had a hilarious season. Likewise I thought Peep Show was great and a lot funnier than last season's effort. I'd mention South Park too on the basis of the episodes at the start of the year like 'The Coon', 'Eat Pray Queef' and 'Fishsticks'. I felt when it came back at the end of the year though it was disappointing.

I really liked Charlie Brooker's News Wipe which was funny as well as insightful, plus the one-off Gameswipe show.

For drama, I thought Lost had a really strong fifth season with some terrific moments and a great acting performance from Terry O'Quinn. Very much looking forward to the final season. Flashforward is a great concept and I've been entertained by the show this year. I never thought I would speak highly of Heroes again but the recent season has been a very pleasant surprise. I won't mention the last season...

As well as the above I've really enjoyed Life on BBC which has been an incredible effort by the BBC. Maybe a less well known choice but I also really liked Pointless, the new quiz show that aired on BBC which I was sad to see end, though thankfully it's to return early next year.

I would add as far as Irish TV goes I think it's been an incredibly poor year, especially as it concerns comedy shows. Some real stinkers in there.

A toss between the Thick Of It and Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle.

American TV had a great year actually, I'm usually more of a Britcom type person but this year it was all about the US

Lost finally got back on form and had a great 5th season.

Modern Family showed that America can still produce great comedy sometimes.

I think they'd be my top two of the year, but I really have to get round to watching Breaking Bad cos I've heard very good things

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

There's a lot of shows I've not gotten around to yet, but I can't imagine anything topping Breaking Bad for me. Having said that the last two episodes (one on the way with DHL) could be bloody brilliant the way it's shaping up.

Its the same winner as last year - Mad Men.

This year: True Blood, Modern Family, and Lost for me.

Don't understand calls for House, it's been sh*te imo, maybe it's always been sh*te (?) I didn't really watch previous seasons.

Oh, and one from left field.... The Ultimate Fighter! The series just finished was at times very entertaining.

I've watched the whole series so far, and parts of previous ones. It's hardly The Wire, I know what's going on.

We are talking about the best shows of 2009, I don't really think House deserves a nomination but that's only my opinion of course.

The final 6 or 7 episodes of season 5 (which all aired in 2009) were some of the best episodes in the shows history, and the season 6 opener was possibly the best episode of the show to date, not to mention 2 or 3 other episodes in season 6 that were truly fantastic...

Season 7 of Curb has been one of the best so far. Mad Men Season 3 was also great and ended brilliantly too.

Has anyone else seen Community? It's my number two new US comedy after Modern Family.

i think big bang theory has gotten better than himym. Truly well written original comedy.

Dexter is still brilliant, didnt like season 3 as much as the others but season 4 so far is back to its best.

Flash Forward for me was pretty good.
Lost, Entourage and Top Gear have been in good form also.

Yeah it was a toughy and I thought about swapping them but went with that. Both are brilliant though and invariably it came down to Barney vs Sheldon and Barney just edged it, its especially better now he is single again. The man is just brilliant.

Can't stand Lost but I never watched it from the start I remember my mates saying to watch it when it had only started a few weeks and their was polar bear on the island and I just thought this is not for me. Don't like Chuck he annoys me, same with House, I know he is meant to annoy you a bit but he annoys me too much and I can't watch the show.
